SESSION DESCRIPTION
SAGES surgeons are increasingly aware of unmet surgical needs in low and middle income countries(LMIC)around
the world. The scope of Global Surgery and opportunities it may provide to serve and enhance their professional
development is less well understood. This session will illuminate the growing field of Global Surgery and provide
attendees with ideas and avenues to get engaged in some of these very worthy endeavors.
SESSION OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Describe the concept of Essential Surgery as defined by the WHA
• Discriminate between elective, urgent and disasater response surgical opportunites in LMICs and the skill sets
required of the surgeons who are best suited to serve in these various settings
• Evaluate the best opportunites and “fit” to contribute and enage in global surgery
