SESSION DESCRIPTION<br />

<strong>SAGES</strong> surgeons are increasingly aware of unmet surgical needs in low and middle income countries(LMIC)around<br />

the world. The scope of Global Surgery and opportunities it may provide to serve and enhance their professional<br />

development is less well understood. This session will illuminate the growing field of Global Surgery and provide<br />

attendees with ideas and avenues to get engaged in some of these very worthy endeavors.<br />

SESSION OBJECTIVES<br />

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:<br />

• Describe the concept of Essential Surgery as defined by the WHA<br />

• Discriminate between elective, urgent and disasater response surgical opportunites in LMICs and the skill sets<br />

required of the surgeons who are best suited to serve in these various settings<br />

• Evaluate the best opportunites and “fit” to contribute and enage in global surgery<br />
