Laparoscopy in Acute Care Surgery

SESSION DESCRIPTION
Acute Care Surgery has emerged as a surgical specialty that provides time sensitive care across a broad scope of
surgical disease. It is recognized that surgical care provided in an emergency setting compared to an elective setting
can bring with it the potential added layers of complexity of metabolic derangements and anatomic distortions from
acute inflammatory reactions. Although these operations have been traditionally approached in an open fashion, the
use of laparoscopy in skilled hands can often be used in the acute care setting. This course is intended for general
surgeons, acute care surgeons, and anyone looking to improve their understanding of the utilization of laparoscopic
techniques in emergency surgery on a mastery level.
SESSION OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Distinguish the laparoscopic approaches and methods used for complex perforated peptic ulcer disease
• Illustrate the effectiveness of laparoscopy in the treatment of complicated pancreatitis
• Develop a strategy for the surgical management of Mirizzi’s Syndrome
• Identify areas of improvement in the emergency treatment of ventral hernias
