Recipient: David Rattner, MD
This award is the highest honor SAGES bestows to an endoscopic surgeon for a lifetime contribution as an innovator in
the field of endoscopic surgery, which may be scientific, technological or educational. The award is not given every year, but
bestowed when the Board determines a worthy nominee.
Dr. Rattner is the Warshaw Family Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Chief Division
Gastrointestinal & General Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA. He served on the SAGES
Board beginning 1999, was Treasurer from 2001-2003, and was President from 2004-2005. He previously chaired
the Finance and Continuing Education Committees, and was Program Director for the 2001 Annual Meeting. He
also served as Chair of the Joint Journal Committee with EAES and Springer, and an active member of the Publications,
Program, Awards and Finance Committees. He organized the 2000 Oncology Postgraduate Course in Atlanta and the
1998 Oncology Course during ACS. He is the founding member of The Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative
Technology (CIMIT) and Co-Director of the Harvard Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, and has served on the Board
of Governors of the American College of Surgeons. He served as a Trustee of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary
Tract and as a Governor of the American College of Surgeons.
David Rattner is innovator, role model, mentor and pioneer. His work in advancing FLS, innovating with CIMIT, and
NOSCARS brought the field of surgical endoscopy forward a decade. According to George Berci, for whom this award is
named, “David Rattner is a man of absolute integrity, a fierce warrior for new ideas, a great mentor and someone with
great generosity of spirit. If David says he will do it, he does. His word is his bond. I am so proud of him.”
