Educator’s Luncheon “Can I Trust my Trainees to do it
Right?” Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA’s) for
Competency-Based Surgical Education
Chair: Matthew Ritter, MD
SESSION DESCRIPTION
Surgical Educators battle with entrustment decisions daily. Having a way to more clearly quantify what a trainee
can be allowed to do independently leads to more efficient training and the natural development of much needed
autonomy. EPA’s are a practical, and actionable way to begin consistently measuring competency and making
entrustment decisions. This lunch time session will review what EPA’s are, how they are developed, and where surgical
education is headed with the application of these useful tools.
Who should attend: Clinical Faculty, Residency and Fellowship Program Directors, Simulation Program Directors,
Clinical Competency Committee members, and Surgical Educators.
SAGES 2017 Surgical Spring Week
SESSION OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Describe how EPA’s facilitate assessment of Core Competencies and achievement of Sub Competency Milestones
• Identify what leading organizations like the American Board of Surgery and SAGES are doing to define EPA’s for
Surgeons
• Recognize how SAGES Surgeons can be involved in ongoing initiatives to develop EPA’s for MIS
