SESSION DESCRIPTION
The indications and best practices for obesity surgery are evolving in the era of laparoscopy, endoscopy,
multidisciplinary teams, facility accreditation, and specialty training. The field of bariatric and metabolic surgery
touts improved outcomes, quality initiatives and advances in patient safety over the last decade. The Appropriateness
Conference reviews updated guidelines from multiple societies.
SESSION OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Recognize currently accepted bariatric operations and appropriate indications for these procedures
• Identify best practices surrounding perioperative management of the bariatric patient
• Assess the optimal training to become a bariatric surgeon
• Understand the role of accreditation in bariatric surgery
