SESSION DESCRIPTION<br />

The indications and best practices for obesity surgery are evolving in the era of laparoscopy, endoscopy,<br />

multidisciplinary teams, facility accreditation, and specialty training. The field of bariatric and metabolic surgery<br />

touts improved outcomes, quality initiatives and advances in patient safety over the last decade. The Appropriateness<br />

Conference reviews updated guidelines from multiple societies.<br />

SESSION OBJECTIVES<br />

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:<br />

• Recognize currently accepted bariatric operations and appropriate indications for these procedures<br />

• Identify best practices surrounding perioperative management of the bariatric patient<br />

• Assess the optimal training to become a bariatric surgeon<br />

• Understand the role of accreditation in bariatric surgery<br />
