SESSION DESCRIPTION
Energy-based devices are used in virtually every operation. Surgical training does not include formal education of
surgical energy-based devices. The FUSE session aims to teach surgeons (1) the fundamental principles of surgical
energy-based devices; (2) the safe use of surgical energy-based devices; (3) the patterns of surgical energy based device
injuries; and (4) the effective use of these devices.
SESSION OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Know the mechanisms of actions by which common surgical energy-based devices work
• Understand the patterns by which surgical energy-based devices cause patient injury
• Identify common scenarios which promote the occurrence of surgical energy-based device complications
