AAST Joint Panel: Acute Care Surgery
Chair: Robert Lim, MD | Co-Chair: Kimberly Davis, MD, MBA
SESSION DESCRIPTION
The acute care surgery model encompasses urgent general surgery, trauma and surgical critical care, delivering time
sensitive care to patients requiring urgent and emergent surgical interventions. Traditionally, these operations have
been performed in an open manner. However, with the increased utilization of laparoscopy, there may be a roll for
increasing the use of laparoscopy in the acute care setting. The purpose of this session is to identify the explore the
role for laparoscopic interventions in the provision of acute care surgery.
SESSION OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Identify the areas where laparoscopic skill development may benefit the Acute Care Surgeon
• Compare and contrast areas where open, laparoscopic or endoscopic intervention may be more beneficial to the
acute care patient
• Illustrate and recommend management strategies for the bariatric surgery patient who presents acutely
