Video Face-Off Panel: Lap Right Colon
Chair: Patricia Sylla, MD | Co-Chair: Dorin Colibaseanu, MD
SESSION DESCRIPTION
This session will contrast different approaches and techniques to perform right colectomy in a minimally invasive
fashion, ranging from multiport and single-port laparoscopy to robotics with intra- or extracorporeal anastomosis.
This is a video forum, during which variations in surgical technique will be emphasized, including ileocolectomy
for Crohn’s disease and complete mesocolic excision for right colon cancer. Through video-based presentations,
attendees will learn optimal strategies for selecting extraction sites, completing anastomoses intracorporeally, and
overcoming visceral obesity and challenges of the reoperative abdomen. Management of intraoperative complications
will emphasize tips and tricks on how to avoid conversion, when possible. This course is designed for any practicing
surgeon who incorporates colon surgery into his or her practice.
SESSION OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Implement the recommended key technical steps to complete laparoscopic right colectomy for benign and
malignant disease
• Understand standard oncologic principles guiding the performance of MIS right colectomy for malignancy
• Appraise the relative advantages and disadvantages associated with various MIS strategies to perform right
colectomy, as well as the anticipated level of technical difficulty and learning curve
