Video Face-Off Panel: Common Bile Duct Exploration -
More than one way to Skin a Cat
Chair: Jeffrey Hazey, MD | Co-Chair: Jeffrey Ponsky, MD
SESSION DESCRIPTION
Common bile duct stones (CBDS) can occur in 3-15% of patients with choledocholithiasis. Every general surgeon
will encounter CBDS in his/her career. Management of CBDS is variable as many general surgeons have limited
experience with common bile duct exploration (both laparoscopic and open). Additionally, management of CBDS by
gastroenterologists and interventional radiologists is variable and dependent on practice locale and expertise. This
video session is to provide insight and offer techniques for the management of CBDS by the general surgeon.
SESSION OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Describe the steps and techniques for open and laparoscopic common bile duct exploration
• Distinguish and articulate the multidisciplinary therapeutic options for common bile duct stones/access
