Ferroelectrics For this class of materials, typified by BaTiO3 , attention is focussed on the process of ageing, i.e. the gradual change of materials properties with time, isothermal conditions and absence of external mechanical loads implied. This process manifests itself in alterations of static and, respectively, kinetic characteristics such as the clamping pressure exerted on the walls of ferroelectric domains and the asymmetry of the electrical conductivity regarding current flow parallel or antiparallel to the direction of the spontaneous polarization; phenomena, which may be explained in terms of migration of charged point defects under the influence of internal or external electric fields. Preliminary results obtained with a drift-diffusion approach suggest that the experimentally observed drastic rise of the clamping pressure with time is indeed controlled by a mechanism of this kind.
