Personnel costs were essentially unchanged in <strong>2010</strong> as<br />

the increase in <strong>com</strong>pensation taking effect as from January<br />

1, 2009 consequent upon the renewal of the collective<br />

bargaining agreement for the Italian electricity industry<br />

was offset by the decline in “other costs”, which included<br />

charges connected with early retirement incentives in the<br />

amount of €388 million (€713 million in 2009). In addition,<br />

costs in respect of termination benefits recognized in<br />

<strong>2010</strong> amounted to €206 million (€232 million in 2009).<br />

The table below shows the average number of employees<br />

by category <strong>com</strong>pared with the previous year, and the actual<br />

number of employees at December 31, <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

“Depreciation” totaled €4,407 million in <strong>2010</strong> and include<br />

the contribution of €2,216 million from Endesa (€1,886<br />

million in 2009).<br />

“Impairment losses” in <strong>2010</strong> include €717 million in writ-<br />

edowns of trade receivables (€547 million in 2009), as<br />

well as adjustment of the goodwill of Endesa Ireland in<br />

the amount of €115 million on the basis of the status of<br />

negotiations as of the balance sheet date.
