The major product from the reaction of V(C0) 6 with cycloheptatriene is (r(­
C7H7)V(C0)3, isoelectronic with (r(-C7H7)Cr(C0)7. Reduction of VCl 4 with
PriMgBr in the presence of cycloheptatriene affords V(I] 6 -C 7H 8 ) 2 , which is
converted in two steps into [V(1] 6 -C7H 8 ) (1] 7 -C 7H7)] + and then into [V(I] 7 -C 7H7) ]> +
using Ph3C+ .PF;.
X-ray diffraction has shown that the C7H7 ring in V(1] 5 -C 5 H 5 )(1] 7-C7H7) is
planar and the carbon-carbon bond distances equal within experimental error.
It might be expected that azulenes would be able to act as 7 -electron ligands. In
those complexes whose crystal structures have been determined this is not so.
In the binuclear iron complex, (azulene)Fe 2 (C0) 5 , for example, azulene acts as
a 5 + 3 electron ligand while in the similar molybdenum compound,
(azulene)Mo 2 (C0) 6 , it is a 2 x 5 electron ligand.
