Much of the early work was qone in theUSA as part of a classified project on borane chemistry, seeking novel rocketfuels, an object which proved abortive. Sin ce then thousands of compounds of thistype ha ve been reported. Carboranes ha ve structures which are related to those ofthe boranes by isoelectronic replacement of groups ( e.g. B- or BH by C; BH 2 orBH- by CH). They may belong to clasa, nida or arachna series, although the last arerelatively uncommon. The usual entry to carborane chemistry is to heat a boranewith an alkyne or to subject the mixture to a silent electric discharge. Thus nidaB5H9 and ethyne at 200°C give mainly nida-2, 3-C 2 B 4 H 8 , while at SOOoC a340
