Part II: Analysis of Exam Areas

The two essay questions are designed to give you an opportunity to write clearly

and effectively. Use specific examples whenever appropriate to aid in supporting

your ideas. Keep in mind that the quality of your writing is much more important

than the quantity.

Write your essays in pencil on the special answer sheets provided. No other paper

may be used. Your writing should be neat and legible. Because you have only a

limited amount of space in which to write, please do not skip lines, do not write

excessively large, and do not leave wide margins.

You may use the bottom of the topic page in the test booklet to organize and plan

your essay before you begin writing.

Analysis of Directions

On the written essay portion of the CBEST, you are instructed to write on two

assigned topics. Spend about 30 minutes on each topic since they are equally

weighted.

You will have space for prewriting. You are urged to use this space to organize

your thoughts. Double-check how much space you have in which to write your

essay. At present, the test provides two blank sides of lined 8 1 ⁄2-x-11-inch paper

per essay.

Some General Tips

1. Read the topic twice — three times if necessary — before writing. Circle key

words. This helps you focus on the task assigned.

2. You may wish to put the topic or question in your own words. This often

helps you understand what is required.

3. Use a form of prewriting before you begin writing your actual essay.

Prewriting can consist of outlining, brainstorming, clustering, and so on.

4. Spend about five minutes organizing your thoughts before you begin writing.

A poorly written essay is often the result of inadequate planning.

5. Don’t let spelling slow down your writing. That is, keep the flow of your

writing going and correct spelling errors later.

6. Take several minutes to reread and edit or correct your essay. Don’t make

extensive changes when you reread; just correct spelling errors and other

minor flaws.

7. Don’t use excessively large writing, don’t leave wide margins, and don’t skip

any lines.

8. Double-check the amount of space you have in which to write each essay.
