Scoring the CBEST Essays
Each essay is scored on a scale of 1 to 4 as follows:
4 = pass
3 = marginal pass
2 = marginal fail
1 = fail
Since each essay is scored twice, the total raw score range for the two essays is
from 4 to 16. This score is scaled to 20 to 80. A raw score of approximately 12
should get you a passing score.
Focus on the components of a good essay.
A good essay:

■ expresses a clear thesis statement on the topic
❑ organizes points logically
■ uses smooth transitions between paragraphs
■ has coherent, unified paragraphs
❑ develops ideas presented
■ gives specific examples to support points

■ uses correct sentence structures
■ uses correct punctuation
■ uses standard written English
❑ uses language skillfully
■ uses a variety of sentence types
■ uses a variety of words
❑ is legible
■ shows clear handwriting
■ appears neat
