The Writing Section

For example, in the following sample Analytical/Expository essay, the thesis statement

is:

I am against the “Back to Basics” movement because it inhibits creativity,

fails to recognize the importance of the arts, and restricts the curriculum.

The thesis statement comes at the end of the introductory paragraph followed by

paragraphs that explain each supporting point. The paper ends with a summary of

the reasons and a restatement of the thesis sentence. Each paragraph should contain

approximately three to five sentences.

The introduction invites the reader to read on. The following reasons (three are

usually sufficient) should give supporting examples or evidence. Your concluding

paragraph summarizes your reasons and restates the thesis statement.

The why essay format looks like the following table in outline form:

1 Introduction — Thesis Sentence Paragraph 1

2 Reason 1 Paragraph 2
