The Mathematics Section

Then get the total number of students in the class:

12 + 18 + 4 + 6 = 40

And finally set up the fraction 16/40, which reduces to 2/5. The correct answer is A.

44. How many combinations of outfits are possible if a person has 4 sports

jackets, 5 shirts, and 3 pairs of slacks?

A. 4

B. 5

C. 12

D. 60

E. 120

The correct answer is D. Because each of the 4 sports jackets may be worn with 5

different shirts, there are 20 possible combinations. These 20 combinations may

be worn with each of the 3 pairs of slacks for a total of 60 possible combinations.

Stated simply, 5# 4# 3= 60possible combinations.

Be Reasonable

Make sure that your answer is reasonable. That is, if you read it back into the

problem, does it make sense? Is it a possible answer?

Sample

45. Mo works at a diner and spends Monday and Tuesday washing dishes. On

Monday he washes 22 more dishes than he washes on Tuesday. If Mo

washed a total of 88 dishes on the two days, how many dishes did he wash

on Tuesday?

A. 22

B. 33

C. 66

D. 99

E. 110

First circle or underline “how many dishes did he wash on Tuesday.” Notice that

answer choices D and E are greater than the total for both days. Those choices are

not reasonable and can be eliminated. If you work the problem and come up with

choice C, you again have an unreasonable answer, because if Mo washes 66

dishes on Tuesday, and 22 more than the 66 on Monday, that is 88 dishes on

Monday alone, which equals the total for the two days.
