Rounding Off

To round off any number:

1. Underline the place value to which you’re rounding off.

2. Look to the immediate right (one place) of your underlined place value.

3. Identify the number to the right. If it is 5 or higher, round your underlined

place value up 1. If the number to the right is 4 or less, leave your underlined

place value as it is and change all the other numbers to its right to zeros.

For example:

Round to the nearest thousand:

345,678 becomes 346,000

928,499 becomes 928,000

This works with decimals as well. Round to the nearest hundredth:

3.4678 becomes 3.47

298,435.083 becomes 298,435.08

Place Value

Each position in any number has place value. For instance, in the number 485, 4

is in the hundreds place, 8 is in the tens place, and 5 is in the ones place. Thus,

place value is as follows:

3 , 0

9 2 , 3 4 5 , 8 7 6 . 4 3 6 2 9 7 0 2
