Passages with Missing Words or Phrases

Read the passage below and answer the three questions that follow.

To transfer a design to be cross-stitched onto fabric, use graph paper with

boxes the size of the stitches you plan to embroider. ______ mark the crosses

on the graph paper to correspond to the design. ______ place a piece of carbon

paper face down on the material and adjust the graph paper over it. ______,

being careful to avoid smudging, use a fine pencil to mark each cross.

Working from left to right, bring the needle out at the lower left-hand corner

of the first square. Now insert the needle in the upper right-hand corner of the

square and bring it out at the lower left-hand corner of the next cross. Do not

complete the cross, but continue making half-crosses from bottom left to top

right to the end of the row. Then turn the work and repeat the process, making

the second half of the crosses to complete the row. Repeat this process on the

next row.

Often the context can “frame” the word and give it meaning.
