<strong>Annals</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>History</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Philosophy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Biology</strong>, Vol. 10 (2005)<br />

Hoßfeld & Breidbach<br />

Haeckel <strong>and</strong> 12% letters from Haeckel. By far <strong>the</strong> greatest number <strong>of</strong> letters – quantitatively<br />

<strong>and</strong> qualitatively – are those that discuss zoological, philosophical <strong>and</strong> more private<br />

problems. The letters listed include originals, copies, <strong>and</strong> published letters in 7 languages;<br />

also drafts <strong>of</strong> letters <strong>and</strong> descriptions <strong>of</strong> letters found in library <strong>and</strong> auction catalogues or<br />

in o<strong>the</strong>r archives <strong>and</strong> museums. The catalogue also gives an overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> networks to<br />

which Haeckel belonged. It also facilitates <strong>the</strong> uncovering <strong>of</strong> new aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> multifaceted<br />

German zoologist <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> comparative reception <strong>of</strong> Darwinism during <strong>the</strong><br />

19th 4 century, or <strong>the</strong> Darwinian heritage 5 worldwide. The reception <strong>of</strong> Haeckel`s ideas<br />

has come to <strong>the</strong> forefront only in <strong>the</strong> last seven years. 6 Most importantly, <strong>the</strong> correspondence,<br />

because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> richness <strong>of</strong> information it contains, ranks as a unique source for<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> biological revolution in which Haeckel – maybe even more than <strong>the</strong><br />

great Englishman – was <strong>the</strong> central figure.<br />
