examination of all available dead birds to determine the extent and causes of lead poisoning in Irish swans. Only with this type of information can appropriate conservation policy of swans in Ireland be formulated. - 59 -
MATERIALS AND METHODS Study sites Blood samples were collected from Mute swans at six sites in Cork, Galway, Belfast, Dublin, Clare and Kerry, corpses were collected from Kilcolman Wildfowl Refuge and Lough Neagh and as many other sites (Table I). The principle sampling site was at a Lough in the western suburbs of Cork city (Fig.I). This freshwater lake (~.I5 acreas) is a refuge for a number of wildfowl including 60 Canada geese and up to I60 Mute swans. The maximum depth is I.5 M in the northern basin and no boating is permitted. site (Anon, I986). It is an internationally renowned coarse angling Two further urban sites were selected namely, the Antrim Road Waterworks, Belfast and Galway Harbour. It was hoped that these samples would reflect levels of organo-lead contamination at an urban site (Table I). The other three sites, Broad Meadows estuary, Malahide; Shannon Lagoon, and Lough Leane (Fig.I) were selected to represent areas with low and presumably background levels of organo-lead· (Table I). Collection and analyses of blood samples Blood samples were taken from uniquely'ringed birds between December I984 and November I986. Samples (5ml) were taken from the brachial vein or, in the case of cygnets, from the tarsal vein (O'Halloran et al., I987a). Blood samples were also taken from Canada geese throughout the period of sampling at Cork Lough. Samples were immediately placed in low lead lithium heparin tubes and stored at -20°c. An .aliquot was also placed in dipotassium ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) tubes for haemoglobin (Hb) analysis. - 60 - i r
