INTRODUCTION Biochemistry plays an important diagnostic role in human and veterinary medicine. Clinical biochemistry is now increasingly being used in avian research and wildlife investigations. Unfortunately, the interpretation of findings is often difficult, partly because normal blood chemistry reference values for many species are not available, and partly because the response of the blood to toxic substances, diseases and infections has not been determined (Hawkey et al., 1983). The veterinary diagnosis of lead poisoning in birds is increasingly being studied throughout the world. In the United States, Janssen et al., (1986), cited values for blood parameters of the California condor [Gymnogyps californicus (Shaw)], but the significance of these values is not clear, as no normal reference values were given. Similiarly, Simpson et al., (1979), in the United Kingdom, examined haemoglobin and haematocrit values in Cygnus olor (Gmelin), but again these were not compared with 'normal' blood values. Roscoe et al., (1979) and Birkhead ( 1983) used free red blood cell protoporphyrin to measure lead exposure in Mute swans without knowing the normal range of values. While the blood chemistry of many species has been well studied e.g. domestic fowl (Freeman, 1984), and referencft haematological values are available for some other species, e.g. cranes and flamingoes (see Hawkey et al. 1983, 1984), no reference values for Mute swan blood chemistry exist. This paper presents some biochemical and haematological reference values, derived from Mute swans which were known to have low lead levels (O'Halloran et al., 1987a). Normal values were compared between - 87 -
I adults, immatures, females and males. Some biochemical and haematological changes in acutely lead poisoned birds were identified by comparison with reference values and related, where possible, to post-mortem findings. - 88 -
