338 Sri Caitanya-caritamrta [Madhya-lila, Ch. 9<br />

TRANSLATION<br />

One Vai�r:-ava known as Vyenkata Bhatta then invited Sri Caitanya<br />

Mahaprabhu to his home with great respect.<br />

PURPORT<br />

Sri Vyer'lkata Bhatta was a Vai�l)ava brahmaQa and an inhabitant of Sri Rar'lga­<br />

k�etra. He belonged to the disciplic succession of Sri Ramanujacarya Sri Rar'lga is<br />

one of the places of pilgrimage in the province of Tamila-desa. The inhabitants of<br />

that province do not retain the name Vyenkata. It is therefore supposed that<br />

Vyenkata Bhatta did not belong to that province, although he may have been<br />

residing there for a very long time. Vyer'lkata Bhana was in a branch of the<br />

Ramanuja-sampradaya known as Ba9agala-i. He had a brother in the Ramanuja­<br />

sampradaya known as Sripada Prabodhananda Sarasvati. The son of Vyer'lkata<br />

Bhatta was later known in the Gau9Jya-sampradaya as Gopala Bhana Gosvami,<br />

and he established the Radharamal)a temple in Vrndavana. More information<br />

about him may be found in a book known as Bhakti-ratnakara (1.1 00) by<br />

Narahari Cakravarti.<br />
