THE SfSTEL'3.<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r events<br />

than Sunday mass and vespers, a walk, <strong>or</strong> an illness.<br />

<strong>The</strong> younger <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se w<strong>or</strong>thy w<strong>or</strong>kwomen was f<strong>or</strong>ty, and<br />

obeyed her sister, as she did when a child. <strong>The</strong> elder looked<br />

after her, took care <strong>of</strong> her, and scolded her with a mo<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

tenderness. At first it was amusing; afterwards one could not<br />

help seeing something affecting in <strong>the</strong>se two gray-haired children<br />

one unable to leave <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> habit <strong>of</strong> obeying, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

that <strong>of</strong> protecting.<br />

And it was not in that alone that my two companions seemed<br />

younger than <strong>the</strong>ir years; <strong>the</strong>y knew so little that <strong>the</strong>ir wonder<br />

never ceased. We had hardly arrived at Clamart bef<strong>or</strong>e<br />

<strong>the</strong>y involuntarily exclaimed, like <strong>the</strong> king in <strong>the</strong> children's<br />

game, <strong>the</strong>y did not think <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld was so great! It was<br />

<strong>the</strong> first time <strong>the</strong>y had trusted <strong>the</strong>mselves on a railroad, and it<br />

was amusing to see <strong>the</strong>ir sudden shocks, <strong>the</strong>ir alarms, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir courageous determinations. Everything was a marvel to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m ! <strong>The</strong>y had <strong>the</strong> remains <strong>of</strong> youth within <strong>the</strong>m, which inacfe<br />

<strong>the</strong>m sensible to things which usually only strike us in childhood.<br />

Po<strong>or</strong> creatures ! <strong>the</strong>y had still <strong>the</strong> feelings <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

age, though <strong>the</strong>y had lost its charms.<br />

But was not <strong>the</strong>re something holy in this simplicity, which<br />

with th<strong>or</strong>ns !<br />

<strong>The</strong> two sisters were called Frances and Madeleine. This<br />

a thunderbolt, makes <strong>the</strong>m shut <strong>the</strong>ir eyes and utter a cry ;<br />

but it has ! already disappeared <strong>The</strong>y look round, take courage<br />

again, and express <strong>the</strong>mselves full <strong>of</strong> astonishment at <strong>the</strong><br />

marvel.<br />

in it <strong>the</strong> sign <strong>of</strong> a long and monotonous seclusion : <strong>the</strong>y nrn<br />

a in it, without any change in <strong>the</strong>ir own lot. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

hud ulwavH lived in <strong>the</strong> game room, at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong><br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pa sages iu <strong>the</strong> Rue St. Denis, where <strong>the</strong> air and <strong>the</strong><br />

sun are scarcely known. <strong>The</strong>y begun <strong>the</strong>ir w<strong>or</strong>k bef<strong>or</strong>e i w<strong>or</strong>k, who ha\<br />

At last <strong>the</strong> train stops, and we get out. I showed <strong>the</strong> two<br />

sisters <strong>the</strong> path that leads to SJ-vivK, between <strong>the</strong> railw:<br />

<strong>the</strong> gardens, and <strong>the</strong>y go on bef<strong>or</strong>e, while I<br />

time <strong>of</strong> returning.<br />

inquire abo t he<br />

I soon join <strong>the</strong>m again at <strong>the</strong>ir next halt, where <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

stopped at <strong>the</strong> little garden belonging to <strong>the</strong> gatekeeper. Both<br />

are already in deep conversation with him while he digs his<br />

garden b<strong>or</strong>ders, and marks out <strong>the</strong> places f<strong>or</strong> flower-seeds. He<br />

inf<strong>or</strong>ms <strong>the</strong>m that it is <strong>the</strong> time fi.r hoeing out weeds, f<strong>or</strong> making<br />

grafts and layers, f<strong>or</strong> sowing annuals, and f<strong>or</strong> destroying<br />

<strong>the</strong> insects on <strong>the</strong> rose-trees. Madeleine has ou <strong>the</strong> sill <strong>of</strong> her<br />

window two wooden boxes, in which, f<strong>or</strong> want <strong>of</strong> air and mm,<br />

she has never been able to make anything grow but mustard<br />

and cress; but she persuades herself that, thanks to thin inf<strong>or</strong>mation,<br />

all o<strong>the</strong>r plants may hencef<strong>or</strong>th thrive in <strong>the</strong>m. At<br />

last <strong>the</strong> gate-keeper, who is sowing a b<strong>or</strong>der with mignonette,<br />

gives her <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seeds which he does not want, and <strong>the</strong><br />

old maid goes <strong>of</strong>f delighted, and begins to act over again <strong>the</strong><br />

dream <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> milkmaid and her can <strong>of</strong> milfc^ with <strong>the</strong>se flowers<br />

<strong>of</strong> her imagination.<br />

On reaching <strong>the</strong> grove <strong>of</strong> acacias, where <strong>the</strong> fair was going<br />

on, I lost sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two sisters. I went alone among <strong>the</strong><br />

had IK en preserved to <strong>the</strong>m by abstinence from- all <strong>the</strong> joys <strong>of</strong><br />

life ? Ah ! how wrong was he who first had <strong>the</strong> bad courage to<br />

attach ridicule to that name <strong>of</strong> old maid, which recalls so many<br />

images <strong>of</strong> grievous deception, <strong>of</strong> dreariness, and <strong>of</strong> abund- nmeut<br />

! how wrong is he who can find a Bights. <strong>The</strong>re were lotteries going on, mountebank shows,<br />

places<br />

subject f<strong>or</strong> sarcasm<br />

in involuntary misf<strong>or</strong>tune, and who can crown gray hairs<br />

f<strong>or</strong> eating and drinking, and f<strong>or</strong> shooting with <strong>the</strong> crossbow.<br />

I have always been struck by <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se out-<strong>of</strong>do<strong>or</strong><br />

festivities. In drawing-room entertainments people are<br />

cold, grave, <strong>of</strong>ten listless and ; most <strong>of</strong> those who go <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

brought toge<strong>the</strong>r by habit <strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> obligations <strong>of</strong> society. In <strong>the</strong><br />

country assemblies, on <strong>the</strong> contrary, you only find those who<br />

are attracted by <strong>the</strong> hope <strong>of</strong> enjoyment. <strong>The</strong>re, it is a f<strong>or</strong>ced<br />

conscription here, <strong>the</strong>y are volunteers f<strong>or</strong> gaiety. <strong>The</strong>n, how<br />

easily <strong>the</strong>y are pleased 1 How far this crowd <strong>of</strong> people is yet<br />

from knowing, that to be pleased with nothing, and to look<br />

down on everything, is <strong>the</strong> height <strong>of</strong> fashion and good taste !<br />

Doubtless <strong>the</strong>ir amusements are <strong>of</strong>ten coarse ; elegance and<br />

refinement are wanting in <strong>the</strong>m but at ;<br />

least <strong>the</strong>y have hearti-<br />

day's journey was a feat <strong>of</strong> lives.<br />

courage without example in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>The</strong> fever <strong>of</strong> tfre times had infected <strong>the</strong>m unawares.<br />

Yesterday, Madeleine had suddenly proposed <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

expedition, and Frances had accepted it immediately. "Perhaps<br />

it would have been better," she said, "if she had not<br />

yielded to <strong>the</strong> temptation <strong>of</strong>fered by her younger sister;" but<br />

"we have our follies at all ages," as she philosophically remarked.<br />

"We really must amuse ourselves," said Madeleine; "we do<br />

but live once. "<br />

And <strong>the</strong> elder sister smiled at this Epicurian maxim.<br />

In truth, it would have been a great pity if any scruple had<br />

interfered with <strong>the</strong>ir happiness, it was so frank and ! genial<br />

<strong>The</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trees, which seemed to fly on both sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

road, causes <strong>the</strong>m unceasing admiration. <strong>The</strong> meeting a train<br />

passing in <strong>the</strong> contrary direction with <strong>the</strong> noise and rapidity <strong>of</strong><br />

ness. Oh, that <strong>the</strong> hearty enjoyment 01 <strong>the</strong>se merry-makings<br />

could be retained in union with less ! vulgar feeling F<strong>or</strong>merly,<br />

religion stamped its holy character on <strong>the</strong> celebration <strong>of</strong> country<br />

festivals, and purified <strong>the</strong> pleasures without depriving<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir joyousness.<br />

<strong>The</strong> hour arrives at which <strong>the</strong> do<strong>or</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> p<strong>or</strong>celain manufact<strong>or</strong>y,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> museum <strong>of</strong> pottery, are open to <strong>the</strong> public. I<br />

meet Frances :md Madeleine again hi <strong>the</strong> first room. Frightened<br />

at finding <strong>the</strong>mselves in <strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> such regal magnific<br />

nee, <strong>the</strong>y hardly d ire walk : <strong>the</strong>y speak in a low tone, as if<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were in a <strong>church</strong>.<br />

"We are in <strong>the</strong> king's house," said <strong>the</strong> eldest sister, f<strong>or</strong>get-<br />

ting that <strong>the</strong>re is no longer a king in France.<br />

I encourage <strong>the</strong>m to go on : I walk first and <strong>the</strong>y make up<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir minds to follow me.<br />

What wonders are brought toge<strong>the</strong>r in this collection ! Here<br />

we see clay moulded into every shape, tinted with every col<strong>or</strong>,<br />

and combined with ever s<strong>or</strong>t <strong>of</strong> substance.<br />

Earth and wood are <strong>the</strong> first substances w<strong>or</strong>ked upon by<br />

man, and seem m<strong>or</strong>e particularly meant f<strong>or</strong> his use! <strong>The</strong>y,<br />

like <strong>the</strong> domestic animals, are <strong>the</strong> essential access<strong>or</strong>ies <strong>of</strong> his<br />

Madeleine declares that such a sight is w<strong>or</strong>th <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

journe y, and Frances would have agreed with her if she had<br />

not recollected, with some little alarm, <strong>the</strong> deficit which such<br />

an expense must make in <strong>the</strong>ir budget. <strong>The</strong> three francs spent<br />

upon this single expedition were <strong>the</strong> savings <strong>of</strong> a whole week<br />

<strong>of</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k. ^Thus <strong>the</strong> joy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> elder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two sisters was<br />

mixed with regret: <strong>the</strong> prodigal child now and <strong>the</strong>n turned<br />

back her eyes towards, <strong>the</strong> back street <strong>of</strong> St. Denis.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> motion and <strong>the</strong> succession <strong>of</strong> objects distract her.<br />

See <strong>the</strong> Bridge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> "Val, surrounded by its lovely landscape:<br />

on <strong>the</strong> right, Paris with its splendid buildings, which rise<br />

-li<strong>the</strong> fog, <strong>or</strong> sparkle in <strong>the</strong> sun; on <strong>the</strong> left, Meudon<br />

with its villas, its woods, its life <strong>the</strong>ref<strong>or</strong>e <strong>the</strong>re must be a ; m<strong>or</strong>e intimate connection between<br />

<strong>the</strong>m and us. Stone and metals require long preparation<br />

: <strong>the</strong>y resist our first eff<strong>or</strong>ts, and belong less to <strong>the</strong> individual<br />

than to communities. Earth and wood are, on <strong>the</strong><br />

vines, and its royal castle! <strong>The</strong><br />

rkwomen look from one window to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r with excla-<br />
