happy young hearts were among <strong>the</strong>m, and happy old ones too,<br />

I dare say, f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> bishop was to be <strong>the</strong>re that m<strong>or</strong>ning, and<br />

to give, in <strong>the</strong> sacrament <strong>of</strong> Confirmation, <strong>the</strong> strength so<br />

needed f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> st<strong>or</strong>m <strong>of</strong> persecution which just <strong>the</strong>n had begun<br />

to sweep over <strong>the</strong> land. Some few <strong>the</strong>re might perhaps even<br />

be, who came to receive <strong>the</strong> rite, after having wept and done<br />

t!;c dills : and<br />

penance over f<strong>or</strong>mer vacillations from <strong>the</strong> faith ; but <strong>the</strong> holy<br />

chrism would be also poured over brows from whence sin hail<br />

not yet dashed <strong>the</strong> innocent dews <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir baptism, f<strong>or</strong>, in those<br />

uncertainty and tribulation, children, almost infants<br />

by <strong>the</strong>ir age, were <strong>of</strong>ten admitted to confirmation, ei<strong>the</strong>r that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y might not die without it, <strong>or</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y might derive from<br />

it <strong>the</strong> courage <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>of</strong>ten called upon to exert, even in<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir tenderest years. <strong>The</strong> <strong>church</strong> was, <strong>the</strong>ref<strong>or</strong>e, crowded.<br />

Within it <strong>the</strong>re was peace, and love, and hope, and prayer !<br />

without it ! but I must not anticipate. Enough, that inf<strong>or</strong>m-<br />

ation had been given <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bishop, <strong>the</strong> Mass, and <strong>the</strong> holy<br />

rite and ; suddenly, in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pauses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> service, a sound,<br />

<strong>the</strong> well-known tramp <strong>of</strong> soldiery, was he .rd. People began<br />

to listen in breathless silence <strong>the</strong> bishop ceased to speak <strong>the</strong><br />

boll was rung no longer, and still <strong>the</strong> sounds without grew<br />

louder <strong>the</strong> tramp, tramp, tramp, m<strong>or</strong>e distinct upon <strong>the</strong> turf.<br />

At length it seemed almost under <strong>the</strong> walls, and <strong>the</strong>n it ceased,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> shrill notes <strong>of</strong> a bugle rang through <strong>the</strong> air. Some one<br />

looked f<strong>or</strong>th from <strong>the</strong> window !<br />

Mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> Go.l ! <strong>the</strong> Cromwel-<br />

luns were upon <strong>the</strong>m ! <strong>The</strong>y were unarmed, <strong>the</strong>ref<strong>or</strong>e <strong>the</strong>y<br />

did not think to fight, nei<strong>the</strong>r did <strong>the</strong>y seek to fly. <strong>The</strong>y knew<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir doom too well. <strong>The</strong>re was no hope f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>m beyond tho<br />

<strong>church</strong> s ><br />

; <strong>the</strong>y barricaded <strong>the</strong> do<strong>or</strong>s, and crowded round <strong>the</strong><br />

nei<strong>the</strong>r rebels n<strong>or</strong> wild beasts <strong>the</strong>y were simply Papists. '<br />

Pri-<br />

son would have been too easy, and such a d ath too speedy.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re was a better vengeance in <strong>the</strong> heads and hearts <strong>of</strong> Crom-<br />

well's band <strong>of</strong> ruffians. Higher than do<strong>or</strong> <strong>or</strong> window <strong>the</strong>y<br />

piled up wood and hay, and straw, and every combustible<br />

thing <strong>the</strong>y could lay <strong>the</strong>ir hands on, and with a wild shout <strong>of</strong><br />

triumph, set <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> it in a blaze. <strong>The</strong> red lijht upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> windows soon told <strong>the</strong> fell deed to those within. At first<br />

<strong>the</strong>y sat gazing upon one ano<strong>the</strong>r, like men stupefied by ter-<br />

r<strong>or</strong>, Mid <strong>the</strong>n, as if moved by one simultaneous impulse, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

all knelt down at <strong>the</strong> feet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir bishop; men and women<br />

impl<strong>or</strong>ing absolution, children, so lately full <strong>of</strong> childish joy,<br />

now screaming and struggling, and clinging to his feet. Goodold<br />

man ! he wept over <strong>the</strong>m and blest <strong>the</strong>m; bul tears might<br />

not quench that funeral pile !<br />

<strong>The</strong> windows soon melted away<br />

in <strong>the</strong> heat, and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> red fire poured rapidly in, flying like<br />

a living creature along <strong>the</strong> walls, taking <strong>the</strong> rafters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceil-<br />

ing, licking up everything it found that might give its fury<br />

food, until <strong>the</strong> soldiery without no longer seemed so terrible<br />

as <strong>the</strong> circling flames within, and half mad witii heat, and<br />

,<br />

flight.<br />

and terr<strong>or</strong>, <strong>the</strong> miserable victims sought escape<br />

And now a terrible scene ensued, as it has been<br />

by<br />

dei<br />

by one w ho shared in its i<br />

barbarities; u retches rc<strong>or</strong>ched<br />

and blackened, beyond<br />

raving in <strong>the</strong>ir madness, <strong>the</strong><br />

mighty crowd swaying hi<strong>the</strong>r and thi<strong>the</strong>r in its various eil'oits<br />

rushed to <strong>the</strong> gateway (<strong>the</strong> do<strong>or</strong>s had lout;<br />

':i burned to<br />

cinders), iuid o<strong>the</strong>rs clambered up to tho<br />

windows to cast <strong>the</strong>mselves down, an<br />

ito <strong>the</strong> pitiless flame s at <strong>the</strong> point <strong>of</strong> tho yet m<strong>or</strong>e piti-<br />

V, lance. At length <strong>the</strong> shout and <strong>the</strong> M<br />

heard no m<strong>or</strong>e, and silence fell on <strong>the</strong> multitude tho silence,<br />

<strong>of</strong> despair; aial <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> bishop ro:-:e: ho had hi<strong>the</strong>rto remained<br />

"f <strong>the</strong> ultur, and over <strong>the</strong> dead and tho<br />

dying <strong>the</strong> f:ilhful shepherd looked, <strong>The</strong>y knew him in tho<br />

midst <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir agony and fear; <strong>the</strong>y knew him, and gin<br />

his intention, bowed down <strong>the</strong>ir heads to receive his absolu-<br />

tion. <strong>The</strong>y were spoken those w<strong>or</strong>ds which gave <strong>the</strong>m hopes<br />

<strong>of</strong> tho peace in heaven <strong>the</strong>y had never known on earth; and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> bishop once m<strong>or</strong>e lifted up his arms to impart his<br />

filial benediction, arid in this attitude, and while yet <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ds<br />

were quivering on his lips, he fell down dead bef<strong>or</strong>e <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

In an instant afterwards, <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> building gave way<br />

with a terrible crash, and all was over.<br />

"This is <strong>the</strong> tradition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country; it is but one tale<br />

amid a thousand o<strong>the</strong>rs, and it has been repeated, even in<br />

<strong>the</strong>se our days <strong>of</strong> enlightened civilization. Not twenty miles<br />

from <strong>the</strong>se very ruins, and not three months from <strong>the</strong> hour in<br />

which you have listened to this st<strong>or</strong>y, three Catholic chapels<br />

have been burned to <strong>the</strong> ground, by men who write <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

w<strong>or</strong>thy descendants <strong>of</strong> Cromwell's ruthless soldiers. And now,<br />

dear Agn.'se, see you not how our f<strong>or</strong>efa<strong>the</strong>rs were f<strong>or</strong>ced to<br />

w<strong>or</strong>ship God in secret and in lonely places, and can you wonder<br />

if we, <strong>the</strong>ir children, have <strong>of</strong>ten nei<strong>the</strong>r hearts n<strong>or</strong> means<br />

left to do o<strong>the</strong>rwise than <strong>the</strong>y did ? "<br />

"Dear Grace,' said "<br />

Agnese. I could almost fancy I was<br />

listening to a tale <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old Christian martyrs."<br />

" <strong>The</strong> martyrs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old Christian times were better <strong>of</strong>f<br />

than we. <strong>The</strong>y suffered f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir faith, and <strong>the</strong>ir very foes denied<br />

<strong>the</strong>m not <strong>the</strong>ir crown, Verily! Verily! ours have 1> on<br />

wi. <strong>or</strong> in <strong>the</strong>ir generation. <strong>The</strong>y have robbed us <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gl<strong>or</strong>y<br />

<strong>of</strong> our martyrdom, to clo<strong>the</strong> us in its shame. True, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

persecute us as Papists, but <strong>the</strong>n it is as rebels that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

us. It was so in England also. <strong>The</strong>y did not put a man to<br />

t<strong>or</strong>ture and to death f<strong>or</strong> being a Catholic, but only f<strong>or</strong> refus-<br />

ing an oath which no Catholic could in conscience take."<br />

" And yet, at Oranm<strong>or</strong>e Castle, I have heard <strong>the</strong>m talk so<br />

altar, where mercy alone might be found f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. Now mark<br />

you, Agnese, if <strong>the</strong>se men were rebels, <strong>the</strong> soldiers might have<br />

broken open <strong>the</strong> do<strong>or</strong>s, dispersed <strong>the</strong> people, <strong>or</strong> taken <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

prison ; <strong>or</strong> if <strong>the</strong>y were wild beasts, <strong>the</strong>y might have fired in at<br />

<strong>the</strong> window, and, packed and cabined as <strong>of</strong>ten as if we were <strong>the</strong> persecut<strong>or</strong>?, and <strong>the</strong>y <strong>the</strong> persecuted,"<br />

replied Agnese.<br />

"<br />

Yes, po<strong>or</strong>, injured lambs !" said Grace, laughing through<br />

her<br />

"<br />

tears. <strong>The</strong>y preach h'berty <strong>of</strong> conscience, and <strong>the</strong>n show<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were, ten rounds<br />

<strong>of</strong> shot would have sent <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong>ir doom. But th'ey were<br />

us fire and faggot when we dare to take it ; yet I ought not to<br />

grumble at <strong>the</strong>se laws, f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>y made a Catholic <strong>of</strong> iny grandfa<strong>the</strong>r."<br />

" I should have thought <strong>the</strong>y would have kept him Pro-<br />

testant."<br />

"<strong>The</strong>y did not, however. He was travelling f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />

time through <strong>the</strong> n<strong>or</strong>th, f<strong>or</strong> he had been educated in England,<br />

and he came suddenly upon a vast assemblage <strong>of</strong> people hear-<br />

ing Mass in an open field, every man bare-headed and upon<br />

his knees, although <strong>the</strong> mud was deep beneath, and <strong>the</strong>. rain<br />

descending in t<strong>or</strong>rents from above. He went home and became<br />

a Catholic, f<strong>or</strong> he said <strong>the</strong>re could be no true religion<br />

upon e.irth, if tho faith which produced such fruits were false."<br />

"<br />

I do not wonder," said Agnese. "Oh, that I also might<br />

be present at suc^i a scene !"<br />

" Dear Agnese ! I have told you why, just now, we fear t ><br />

meet in public. <strong>The</strong>re is yet ano<strong>the</strong>r reason. <strong>The</strong> priest, <strong>the</strong><br />

only one now left in this immediate district, has most unjustly<br />

become suspected as a rebel and a, fav<strong>or</strong>er <strong>of</strong> rebellion, and inf<strong>or</strong>mations<br />

to tl.is respect have been lodged against him."<br />

" But ho is not he cannot be a rebel !" cried Aguese.<br />

"Far from it. He holds rebellion in abh<strong>or</strong>rence, as a foul<br />

<strong>of</strong>fence against <strong>the</strong> laws both <strong>of</strong> God and man ; and it is mainly<br />

i> his influence that <strong>the</strong> people about here have been<br />

kept from joining in <strong>the</strong> wild cry <strong>of</strong> vengeance, which, n<strong>or</strong>th<br />

and south, and east and west, is sweeping through <strong>the</strong> land.<br />

>ws this, and <strong>the</strong>ref<strong>or</strong>e he has rejected many an opp<strong>or</strong>tunity<br />

<strong>of</strong> escape which has <strong>of</strong>fered itself, to f<strong>or</strong>eign sh<strong>or</strong>es.<br />
