ied by <strong>the</strong> Spaniard. Wo find here <strong>the</strong> stamp <strong>of</strong> every race,<br />
every country, and every age.<br />
My companions seemed to be little interested in <strong>the</strong>se hist<strong>or</strong>ical<br />
associations ; <strong>the</strong>y looked at all with that credulous<br />
admiration which leaves no room f<strong>or</strong> examination <strong>or</strong> discussion.<br />
Madeleine road <strong>the</strong> name under every piece <strong>of</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k-<br />
manship, and her sister answered with an exclamation <strong>of</strong> wonder.<br />
In this way we reached a little court-yard, where <strong>the</strong>y had<br />
thrown away <strong>the</strong> fragments <strong>of</strong> some broken china. Frances<br />
perceived a broken saucer, almost whole, <strong>of</strong> which she took<br />
possession, as a rec<strong>or</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> visit she was making. Hencef<strong>or</strong>th<br />
she would have a specimen <strong>of</strong> Sevres china which is only<br />
made f<strong>or</strong> kings. I would not undeceive her, by telling her<br />
that <strong>the</strong> products <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manufact<strong>or</strong>y are sold all over <strong>the</strong><br />
w<strong>or</strong>ld, and that her saucer bef<strong>or</strong>e it was cracked, was <strong>the</strong> same<br />
as those that are bought at <strong>the</strong> shops f<strong>or</strong> sixpence ! Why should<br />
I destroy <strong>the</strong> illusions <strong>of</strong> her simple existence? Aro we to<br />
break down <strong>the</strong> hedge-flowers which perfume oiir paths?<br />
Things are <strong>of</strong>tenest nothing in <strong>the</strong>mselves : <strong>the</strong> thoughts we<br />
attach to <strong>the</strong>m alone give <strong>the</strong>m value. To rectify innocent<br />
mistakes, in <strong>or</strong>der to discover some useless reality, is to be like<br />
<strong>the</strong>se learned men who will see nothing in a "lant but <strong>the</strong><br />
chemical elements <strong>of</strong> which it is composed.<br />
On leaving <strong>the</strong> manufact<strong>or</strong>y, <strong>the</strong> two sisters, who had taken<br />
possession <strong>of</strong> me with <strong>the</strong> freedom <strong>of</strong> artlessness, invited me to<br />
share <strong>the</strong> luncheon <strong>the</strong>y had brought with <strong>the</strong>m. I declined<br />
at first ; but <strong>the</strong>y insisted with so much good nature, that I<br />
feared to pain <strong>the</strong>m, and with some awkwardness I gave way.<br />
We had only to look f<strong>or</strong> a convenient spot. I led <strong>the</strong>m up <strong>the</strong><br />
hill, and we found a plot <strong>of</strong> grass enamelled with daisies, and<br />
shaded by two walnut trees.<br />
Madeleine could not contain herself f<strong>or</strong> joy. All her life she<br />
had dreamt <strong>of</strong> a dinner out on <strong>the</strong> grass! While helping her<br />
sister to take <strong>the</strong> provisions from <strong>the</strong> basket, she tells me <strong>of</strong> all<br />
<strong>the</strong> expeditions into <strong>the</strong> country that had been planned, and put<br />
<strong>of</strong>f. Frances, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, was brought up at Mont-<br />
m<strong>or</strong>ency, and, bef<strong>or</strong>e, she became an <strong>or</strong>phan, she had <strong>of</strong>ten<br />
gone back to her nurse's house. That which had <strong>the</strong> attraction<br />
<strong>of</strong> novelty f<strong>or</strong> her sister, had f<strong>or</strong> her <strong>the</strong> charm <strong>of</strong> recol-<br />
lection. She told <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vintage harvests to which her parents<br />
had taken her <strong>the</strong> rides on Mo<strong>the</strong>r ;<br />
Luret's donkey, that <strong>the</strong>y<br />
could not make go to <strong>the</strong> right without pulling to <strong>the</strong> left ;<br />
<strong>the</strong> cherry ga<strong>the</strong>ring ;<br />
er's boat.<br />
and <strong>the</strong> sails on <strong>the</strong> lake in <strong>the</strong> innkeep-<br />
<strong>The</strong>se recollections have all <strong>the</strong> charm and freshness <strong>of</strong><br />
childhood. Frances recalls to herself less what she has seen<br />
than what she has felt. Whilst she is talking <strong>the</strong> cloth is laid,<br />
and we sit down under a tree. Bef<strong>or</strong>e us winds <strong>the</strong> valley <strong>of</strong><br />
Se'vres, its many-st<strong>or</strong>ied houses abutting upon <strong>the</strong> gardens and<br />
<strong>the</strong> slopes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hill; on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side spreads out <strong>the</strong> park<br />
<strong>of</strong> St. Cloud, with its magnificent clumps <strong>of</strong> trees intersected<br />
by glades above, stretch <strong>the</strong> heavens like an immense ocean,<br />
THK 31<br />
in which <strong>the</strong> clouds are Railing ! I look at this beautiful<br />
country and I listen to <strong>the</strong>se good M maids I 6<br />
am interested; and time passes wii,<br />
At last <strong>the</strong> sun sets, and we have to tJ:i'<br />
Whilst Madeleine and Frances clear away <strong>the</strong> dinner, I .<br />
down to <strong>the</strong> manufact<strong>or</strong>y to ask th hour. <strong>The</strong> i<br />
is nt its height; <strong>the</strong> blasts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trombones resound j<br />
baud under <strong>the</strong> acacias. F<strong>or</strong> a few moments I f<strong>or</strong>got in ,<br />
with looking about; but I have promised <strong>the</strong> two sisters to i<br />
<strong>the</strong>m back to <strong>the</strong> Bellevue Station. <strong>The</strong> train cannotwait, and<br />
I make haste to climb <strong>the</strong> path again which leads to <strong>the</strong> wal-<br />
nut-trees.<br />
Just bef<strong>or</strong>e I reached <strong>the</strong>m I heard voices on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hedge; Madeleine and Frances were speaking to a pr<br />
girl whose clo<strong>the</strong>s were burnt, her hands , blackened, i:d her<br />
face tied up with blood-stained bandages. I saw that nhi<br />
one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> girls employed at <strong>the</strong> gunpowder mills, which are<br />
built higher up on <strong>the</strong> commoa. An explosion had taken placo<br />
a few days bef<strong>or</strong>e ; <strong>the</strong> girl's mo<strong>the</strong>r and elder sister v,<br />
killed ; she herself escaped by a miracle, and was now left<br />
without any means <strong>of</strong> supp<strong>or</strong>t. She told all this with <strong>the</strong> re-<br />
signed and unhopeful manner <strong>of</strong> one who has always been accustomed<br />
to suffer. <strong>The</strong> two sisters were much affected. I<br />
saw <strong>the</strong>m consulting with one ano<strong>the</strong>r in a low tone ; <strong>the</strong>n<br />
Frances took thirty sous out <strong>of</strong> a little coarse silk purse<br />
which was all <strong>the</strong>y had left and gave <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>or</strong> girl.'<br />
I hastened to that side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hedge; but, bef<strong>or</strong>e I reached it,<br />
I met <strong>the</strong> two old sisters, who called out to me that <strong>the</strong>y would<br />
not return by <strong>the</strong> railway, but on foot. I <strong>the</strong>n understood that<br />
<strong>the</strong> money <strong>the</strong>y had meant f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> journey had been giyen to<br />
<strong>the</strong> beggar. Good, like evil, is contagious; I run to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>or</strong><br />
wounded girl, give her <strong>the</strong> sum that was to pay f<strong>or</strong> my own<br />
place, and return to Frances and Madeleine, and tell <strong>the</strong>m I<br />
will walk with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
I am just come back from taking <strong>the</strong>m home ; and have left<br />
<strong>the</strong>m delighted with <strong>the</strong>ir day, <strong>the</strong> recollection <strong>of</strong> which will<br />
long make <strong>the</strong>m happy.<br />
This m<strong>or</strong>ning I was pitying those whose lives are obscure<br />
and joyless ; now, I understand that God has provided a<br />
compensation with every trial. <strong>The</strong> smallest pleasure derives<br />
from rarity a relish o<strong>the</strong>rwise unknown. Enjoyment is only<br />
what we feel to be such, and <strong>the</strong> luxurious man feels no longer.<br />
Satiety has lost him his appetite, while privation preserves to<br />
<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r that first <strong>of</strong> earthly blessings <strong>the</strong> being easily made<br />
that I could persuade every one <strong>of</strong> this ! that so<br />
happy. Oh !<br />
<strong>the</strong> rich might not abuse <strong>the</strong>ir riches, and that <strong>the</strong> pocr might<br />
have patience. If happiness is <strong>the</strong> rarest <strong>of</strong> blessings, it is<br />
because <strong>the</strong> proper reception <strong>of</strong> it is <strong>the</strong> rarest <strong>of</strong> virtues.<br />
Madeleine and Frances ! W<strong>or</strong>thy sisters ! whose courage,<br />
resignation, and generous hearts are your only wealth, pray<br />
f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> wretched who give <strong>the</strong>mselves up to despair ; f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
unhappy \dio hate and envy ; and f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> unfeeling into whose<br />
enjoyments no pity enters.
