CHAPTER VI.<br />

use all <strong>the</strong> means in <strong>the</strong>ir power to invoke <strong>the</strong> fav<strong>or</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gods<br />

<strong>The</strong> greatest imp<strong>or</strong>tance was attached to this campaign. It had<br />

to carry <strong>the</strong> banner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> K<strong>or</strong>n;itn to <strong>the</strong> eastern banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Danube, and to announce <strong>the</strong> fame <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ticl<strong>or</strong>ious arms to <strong>the</strong><br />

surrounding barbarians as far down as <strong>the</strong> land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jazygan,<br />

now called Hungary, and <strong>the</strong> woody sh<strong>or</strong>es <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>The</strong>iss. <strong>The</strong><br />

enemy was known to <strong>the</strong>m; and <strong>the</strong> renown <strong>of</strong> Ariovist, <strong>the</strong><br />

general <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Marcomanni and <strong>of</strong> Armin's vict<strong>or</strong>y, were well<br />

remembered by <strong>the</strong>m ;<br />

and could <strong>the</strong>y have f<strong>or</strong>gotten <strong>the</strong> bravery<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Germans, <strong>the</strong>y had a memento <strong>of</strong> it, in <strong>the</strong> annual procession<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Capitoline geese, which by <strong>the</strong>ir cackling once saved<br />

Home from, a nightly attack <strong>of</strong> those barbarians. Countless<br />

sacrifices bled on <strong>the</strong> altars <strong>of</strong> Aquileia, as well as at A<strong>the</strong>ns.<br />

All <strong>the</strong> purifications customary since <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Numa, were<br />

perf<strong>or</strong>med. <strong>The</strong>re was also a Lektisteruium <strong>of</strong> seven days celebrated,<br />

which consisted <strong>of</strong> meats being <strong>of</strong>fered to <strong>the</strong> gods on<br />

small tables, bef<strong>or</strong>e which <strong>the</strong> statues were left lying, but those<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> goddesses were placed sitting. * To <strong>the</strong> east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Acropo-<br />

lis uot far from Adrian's Arch, where to this day, sixteen gi-<br />

gantic pillars <strong>of</strong> C<strong>or</strong>inthian architecture stand, was <strong>the</strong> magnificent<br />

temple <strong>of</strong> Jupiter Olympus. This edifice was supp<strong>or</strong>ted by<br />

a f<strong>or</strong>est <strong>of</strong> pillars, one hundred and twenty in number, and was<br />

two thousand three hundred feet in circumference. It was Adrian<br />

who completed this ancient building. A countless number<br />

<strong>of</strong> statues <strong>or</strong>namented <strong>the</strong> whole, but <strong>the</strong> one which held <strong>the</strong> first<br />

astonishing impression on <strong>the</strong> traveler; which can only bo exceeded<br />

by viewing <strong>the</strong> remnant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Acropolis a city <strong>of</strong> gods<br />

reduced to fragments!<br />

A clear m<strong>or</strong>ning smiled^rom <strong>the</strong> heavens, <strong>the</strong> sun had scarcely<br />

appeared above <strong>the</strong> h<strong>or</strong>izon, when <strong>the</strong> men <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ns tit to bear<br />

arms, assembled toge<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong>ir coats <strong>of</strong> mail and brazen helmets,<br />

glittering in <strong>the</strong> m<strong>or</strong>ning sun. Lucius was also ready, and<br />

whispered mysteriously in his mo<strong>the</strong>r's car, that <strong>the</strong> Augurs com-<br />

plained, <strong>the</strong> day previous, that <strong>the</strong> sacred chickens would not<br />

feed, and that at <strong>the</strong> last augury, nei<strong>the</strong>r a raven n<strong>or</strong> crow had<br />

appeared. "Obstinate ravens," added he, "at o<strong>the</strong>r times <strong>the</strong>y<br />

will croak all <strong>the</strong> day lung."<br />

"<strong>The</strong>ref<strong>or</strong>e, we must pray <strong>the</strong> m<strong>or</strong>e f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> gods," replied Metella, who was just having a parsley<br />

wreath twined through her hair. "An unf<strong>or</strong>tunate augury,"<br />

said she, " is a serious matter, f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>reby people lose courage.<br />

Have you not heard what <strong>the</strong> <strong>or</strong>acle at Delphi has proclaimed<br />

"O, <strong>the</strong> <strong>or</strong>acle," said Lucius, "that knows no longer whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />
