that in this division <strong>the</strong> men under charge<br />

and in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> women, under <strong>the</strong> care <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> led. This division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sexes at divfeie w<strong>or</strong>ship<br />

was a matter <strong>of</strong> jealous discipline in t'.ie early Church.<br />

Often <strong>the</strong>se subterranean <strong>church</strong>es were not devoid <strong>of</strong> ar-<br />

chitectural dec<strong>or</strong>ation. <strong>The</strong> walls, especially near <strong>the</strong> altar,<br />

were plastered anil painted, and half columns, with <strong>the</strong>ir banes<br />

>>itals, not ungracefully cut out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sandstone, divided<br />

<strong>the</strong> different parts <strong>or</strong> <strong>or</strong>namented <strong>the</strong> entrances. In one<br />

instance, indeed in <strong>the</strong> chief basilica yet discovered in <strong>the</strong><br />

cemetery <strong>of</strong> Callistus, <strong>the</strong>re is a chamber without any altar,<br />

place reserved f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> public penitents called nndii-ntf.s<br />

<strong>or</strong> hearers, and f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> catechumens, not yet initiated by bap-<br />

tism.<br />

<strong>The</strong> basilica, in which <strong>the</strong> Christians were assembled, when<br />

Sebastian sent his message, was like <strong>the</strong> one discovered in <strong>the</strong><br />

cemetery<strong>of</strong> St. Agnes. Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two divisions was double, that<br />

is, consisted <strong>of</strong> two large chambers, slightly separated by halfcolumns,<br />

in what we may call <strong>the</strong><br />

women's <strong>church</strong>, and by <strong>the</strong> flat pilasters<br />

in <strong>the</strong> men's, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se surfaces<br />

having in it<br />

a small niche f<strong>or</strong><br />

feature <strong>of</strong> this basilica is<br />
