TYEORNE.<br />
h;md, :ind tho last absolution fell on <strong>the</strong> soul <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> in<br />
<strong>The</strong> : hangman ow came up, and, kneeling down, impl<strong>or</strong>ed<br />
pardon f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> deed he was about to end.<br />
"Most willingly do I f<strong>or</strong>give <strong>the</strong>e," said Walter, giving him<br />
some pieces <strong>of</strong> gold he had brought with him f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> purpose.<br />
<strong>The</strong> man began to take <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> upper garments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> priest;<br />
and while he did so, Walter cast one glance round on <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld<br />
ho was about to leave. On one hand stretched <strong>the</strong> large f<strong>or</strong>est<br />
<strong>of</strong> St. John, which covered <strong>the</strong> country in <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong><br />
Edgeware, and its tail trees -waved proudly in <strong>the</strong> summer<br />
light. Towards Paddington <strong>the</strong> country was m<strong>or</strong>e bare, and<br />
like a little distant speck was that farmhouse where Walter<br />
said his last Mass.* On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side, <strong>the</strong> smooth,<br />
green meadows sloped down towards <strong>the</strong> river, and<br />
far <strong>of</strong>f were seen <strong>the</strong> oxen quietly grazing. Far<strong>the</strong>r<br />
in <strong>the</strong> distance <strong>the</strong> silver Thames rippled in <strong>the</strong> sunlight,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> gl<strong>or</strong>ious Abbey <strong>of</strong> Westminster stood out clearly<br />
in its beauty. One glance around, and one o<strong>the</strong>r into <strong>the</strong> clear<br />
blue sky, and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> hangman came near to put <strong>the</strong> rope<br />
round <strong>the</strong> priest's neck and Walter took hold <strong>of</strong> it and kissed<br />
;<br />
it, aud <strong>the</strong>n put it on his shoulders, saying, ''Behold <strong>the</strong> last<br />
stole <strong>of</strong> my priesthood." He closed his eyes, and clasping his<br />
might rest in peace. No need <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>s,; f<strong>or</strong> him. <strong>The</strong> v.hite<br />
robes gleam in heaven with radiant brightness, f<strong>or</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r is<br />

"When <strong>the</strong>y arrived at Tyb<strong>or</strong>ne, <strong>the</strong>y found <strong>the</strong> gibbet beautifully ad<strong>or</strong>ned<br />
with garlands and wreaths <strong>of</strong> flowera, and <strong>the</strong> ground all covered with od<strong>or</strong>iferous<br />

<strong>The</strong> instances <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> martyrs surviving and speaking, after <strong>the</strong> heart had bean<br />
extracted, are numerous.<br />
hands, he said, "In manus tuas Domine sommendo spiritum<br />
meum." <strong>The</strong> rope was drawn tight, and <strong>the</strong> plank on which,<br />
he stood withdrawn from uuder his feet ; but <strong>the</strong> very next in-<br />
stant <strong>the</strong> sheriff gave a sign, and though <strong>the</strong> people cried eagerly,<br />
"Hold, hold," <strong>the</strong> rope was cut, and Walter dropped on<br />
<strong>the</strong> scaffold, insensible, but not dead. Hastily <strong>the</strong>y stripped<br />
him, aud <strong>the</strong>n began that scene <strong>of</strong> butchery which would have<br />
disgraced a hea<strong>the</strong>n nation, and which we shrink from describing<br />
; never<strong>the</strong>less, as was beautifully said in speaking <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> martyr was struck from his body, and<br />
in doing so <strong>the</strong> clumsy hangman let his axe first fall on <strong>the</strong><br />
arm, and severed from it <strong>the</strong> right hand it rolled over <strong>the</strong><br />

scaffold, and was instantly perceived by Arthur Leslie, who<br />
contrived to take it up and conceal it. \ But <strong>the</strong> body <strong>of</strong> Walter<br />
was not, as usual with o<strong>the</strong>rs, quartered and placed on London<br />
Bridge L<strong>or</strong>d Beauville had no wish to be thus reminded <strong>of</strong><br />
his kinsman and so th j remains were hastily thrown into a cart,<br />
and interred within <strong>the</strong> precincts <strong>of</strong> Newgate, as <strong>the</strong>y would<br />
have buried a dog, without chant <strong>or</strong> prayer. So <strong>the</strong>y deemed;<br />

sufferings <strong>of</strong> martyrs in <strong>the</strong> olden limes, " what <strong>the</strong>y endured,<br />
we may bear to hear <strong>of</strong>." <strong>The</strong> design was to cut open <strong>the</strong><br />
body till <strong>the</strong>y found <strong>the</strong> heart. <strong>The</strong>y literally began to cut him<br />
in p eces. Groans and sobs were heard on all sides, and many<br />
tears were shed, aud some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> senseless rabble yelled and<br />
howled like brute beasts. <strong>The</strong> executioners growing timid, did<br />
<strong>the</strong>;r w<strong>or</strong>k badly, and cut and stabbed, scarce knowing what<br />
<strong>the</strong>y were about. <strong>The</strong> first incision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> knives had woke<br />
Walter to full consciousness <strong>the</strong> executioners flew ; upon him<br />
to bind him down. <strong>The</strong>re was no need, he lay perfectly still ;<br />

and <strong>the</strong> quivering heart was t<strong>or</strong>n from its place and<br />

and shown to <strong>the</strong> howling multitude.<br />

<strong>the</strong>m had, indeed been written by Arthur himself, at W Iter's<br />
dictation, but <strong>the</strong> trembling signature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> t<strong>or</strong>tured hand <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> martyr was <strong>the</strong>re to enhance <strong>the</strong>ir value in <strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
