month <strong>of</strong>f, and this seemed like au ago to Pierrot. N<strong>or</strong> could<br />

any entreaties prevail on th<strong>or</strong>n to communicate to him <strong>the</strong> nature<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir intention. Only he clearly saw preparations mak-<br />

ing at <strong>the</strong>ir houses, f<strong>or</strong> a complete and sudden flight ; and in<br />

this he felt he had <strong>the</strong> best pledge and security f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> truth<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir promises.<br />

Let us in <strong>the</strong> mean time, return to consider his po<strong>or</strong> wife<br />

and child. Every month <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period, over which we have<br />

traced Pierrot's evil course, had sunk <strong>the</strong>m deeper in misery<br />

and in s<strong>or</strong>row. Of <strong>the</strong> character <strong>of</strong> his crimes <strong>the</strong>y had no<br />

evidence ; f<strong>or</strong> as he never brought home his share <strong>of</strong> plunder,<br />

and as he kept a moody silence and reserve, <strong>the</strong>y had no ground<br />

on which to suspect far<strong>the</strong>r, than that lie was engaged in some-<br />

thing very wrong. Even when at home, he could get but little<br />

w<strong>or</strong>k, f<strong>or</strong> now no one cnred to employ him ; and so his once<br />

neat and happy dwelling b<strong>or</strong>e marks <strong>of</strong> poverty, neglect, and<br />

decay. And within, too, all was s<strong>or</strong>row and distress ; no cheerful<br />

conversation, no smile, no confidence. <strong>The</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r and<br />

<strong>the</strong> daughter, indeed, understood one ano<strong>the</strong>r, but it was m<strong>or</strong>e<br />

by silent sympathy, than by exchange <strong>of</strong> sentiment ; f<strong>or</strong> each<br />

feared ever to swell <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r's grief, and generally stifled her<br />

inward feelings, and repressed <strong>the</strong> gushing tear, <strong>or</strong> wept alone.<br />

And let this be added to <strong>the</strong> praises <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> po<strong>or</strong>, that none bet-<br />

ter than <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>the</strong> inb<strong>or</strong>n delicacy to hon<strong>or</strong> virtue in dis-<br />

tress, and refrain from sarcasm and reproach against those<br />

whom bitter trials oppress. Never was <strong>the</strong> conduct <strong>of</strong> Pierrot,<br />

though now not<strong>or</strong>ious and a public scandal, cast into <strong>the</strong> face<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se two f<strong>or</strong>l<strong>or</strong>n ones, m<strong>or</strong>ally indeed a widow and an <strong>or</strong>phan.<br />

But ra<strong>the</strong>r it seemed as if a tacit hon<strong>or</strong> was paid to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir suffering innocence ; every one made way f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>m;<br />

every one seemed to s<strong>of</strong>ten his voice as he addressed <strong>the</strong>m ;<br />

many a little present, artfully conveyed, so as to repress all<br />

sense <strong>of</strong> obligation, made its way to <strong>the</strong>ir cottage to soo<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

distress and ; many a kind hope that God would console <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

was whispered at <strong>the</strong> ekurch do<strong>or</strong> in <strong>the</strong>ir ear.<br />

And He did, in truth console <strong>the</strong>m : f<strong>or</strong> without His Pre-<br />

sence, His Grace, His Light, His Food, <strong>the</strong>ir hearts would<br />

long since have been broken by despairing s<strong>or</strong>row. Again and<br />

again did <strong>the</strong>y kneel at evening bef<strong>or</strong>e <strong>the</strong> altar, and <strong>the</strong>re<br />

ever found <strong>the</strong>y <strong>the</strong> calm and peace which resignation to <strong>the</strong><br />

Divine Will alone can give. It was on one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se occasions<br />

that a new association <strong>of</strong> ideas led our little contemplative to<br />

consoling thoughts, akin to those which we have seen <strong>the</strong><br />

from <strong>the</strong> s<strong>or</strong>-<br />
