Routine pre-operative medical testing of patients undergoing cataract surgery is commonly done, although its value is uncertain,
We studied such routine testing had any value in minimizing operative and post-operative medical complications. 18,189
patients undergoing 19,1557 cataract surgeries at nine centers were randomized on a per operation basis to receive or not receive
a standard battery of pre-operative medical tests (electrocardiogram and complete blood count, and measurement of serum electrolytes,
urea nitrogen, cratinine, and glucose) in addition to history and physical examination. Medical adverse events and interventions
that occurred on the day of surgery through seven days post-operatively were recorded.
During 1999-2000, South Carolina’s Department of Corrections (SCDC), Department of Health and Environmental Control
(DHEC), and CDC investigated an outbreak of drug-susceptible tuberculosis (TB) that occurred in a state correctional facility
housing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected inmates. All culture-confirmed case-patients have been linked by
IS6110-based DNA fingerprinting of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates. This report describes the outbreak investigation and
illustrates the need for increased vigilance for TB in settings in which HIV-infected persons congregate.
”All Men--Make a Difference!” is the theme designated by the joint United Nations Program on Human Immunodeficiency
Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) for this year’s World AIDS Day, December 1, 2000. This year’s
theme encourages men to increase their awareness of the risk for HIV infection for themselves, their sec partners, and their families
and to use their influence to help stem the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In the USA, most persons living with HIV infection and AIDS
are men. Some men’s behavior often places their sex partners at risk for infection. In cultures where there is a substantial imbalance
in men’s and women’s social power, focusing prevention efforts on men is an essential step toward reducing HIV transmission.
