5. Auschwitz as a Transit Camp for Western Jews<br />

On September 5, 1942, SS-Untersturmführer Horst Ahnert, member of the<br />

SIPO and of the SD in Paris, wrote a note on the “Evacuation of Jews,” which<br />

begins as follows: 727<br />

“At the beginning of July 1942, the Reichssicherheitshauptamt ordered<br />

that, for the purpose of the final solution of the Jewish problem, the transportation<br />

of Jews out of the territories occupied by Germany for the goal of<br />

labor assignment should be begun on a greater scale.”<br />

On September 12, there was a meeting between Reich Minister Albert<br />

Speer, SS-Obergruppenführer Oswald Pohl, the director of the SS-WVHA, and<br />

other functionaries. On the following day, Pohl handed a detailed report to<br />

Himmler. The discussion had concentrated on four points, the first of which<br />

was the “Enlargement of the barracks-camp of Auschwitz as a result of the<br />

eastern migration.”<br />

Pohl wrote on this point: 728<br />

“In this manner, Reichsminister Prof. Speer wants to guarantee the deployment<br />

at short notice of approximately 50,000 Jews fit for work in<br />

closed companies with existing possibilities for lodging. We will skim off<br />
