Esta primera edición de El Alto es el resultado de años de trabajo, paciencia y
visión de varios colegas y colaboradores del Reino Unido y las Américas, a quienes
agradezco en primer lugar. Mi participación en este programa arranca recién en su
tercer año, pero su impacto me ha impulsado e inspirado a buscar una plataforma
donde contar sus diferentes historias. Espero las disfruten y les permitan entender
mejor este estimulante e importante espacio de debate dentro del arte y la cultura,
que celebra la creatividad y la libertad, y expande las fronteras de lo humano.
Gracias especiales a Natalia Mallo por las infinitas horas de trabajo juntos y los
muchos cigarros fumados vía Skype entre Recoleta en Buenos Aires y Pompéia en
São Paulo. ¡Sha sha sha estamos listos! Nos vemos en el siguiente número.

It’s been a privilege and a joy to work with artists and producers and fellow curators
and activists in the Americas over the last four years. More than this, it has been
an exhilarating re-awakening to the power and potential of queer art and creative
collaboration at a time when the stories we tell are more important than ever in
manifesting our world.
The artists, activists and creators in this publication are not only reclaiming and reforming
creative and cultural conversations about sexuality and gender in their own
contexts, they are also reframing questions and sharing experiences that move the
conversation beyond the narrow meanings of “LGBT” and “queer” that have shaped
the white western narrative on this subject for the past 20 years or more.
At a time when we in the west have largely shifted our terminologies and focus to
“post-equality”, work coming from the Americas (Latin America and the Caribbean
in particular) asks “whose equality?” and “what are the stories of our sexualities and
genders that do not leave out everything else in our histories and realities?”
If Queer Art and Queer Activism have always been intersectional, questioning, and
radical in their creative vision and aspiration, then the marica/cuir/queer art within
these pages is a reminder of what is possible when we walk brave together into our
ideas. What hope becomes manifest! What magic becomes possible!
Ha sido un privilegio y un placer trabajar con artistas, productorxs, curadorxs y
activistas de los diferentes rincones de las Américas en estos últimos cuatro años.
La experiencia ha sido un estimulante proceso de reconexión con el poder y el
potencial del arte queer y de las colaboraciones creativas, en un momento en el que
contar estas historias se hace indispensable e importante.
Lxs artistas, activistas y creadorxs listados en esta publicación están no sólo
reivindicando y redefiniendo el debate cultural sobre sexualidad y género en sus
diferentes contextos locales; su trabajo y experiencias están también resignificando
los parámetros de lo “LGBT y lo queer” que, anclados en un paradigma occidental,
vienen monopolizando el debate en los últimos 20 años.
En este momento donde occidente ha redefinido sus categorías en aras de un
paradigma “post-ecualitario”, el arte que viene de las Américas (de Latinoamérica
y el Caribe, sobre todo) ayuda a preguntarnos ¿quiénes son los beneficiarios de esa
igualdad? y ¿cuáles son las historias sobre nuestras sexualidades e identidades de
género que no dejan de lado todo lo demás en nuestra realidad e historia?
Si el arte y activismo queer han sido siempre interseccionales, cuestionadores,
radicales en su visión y ambición creativa, entonces el arte marica/cuir/queer de
estas páginas sirven como recordatorio de lo que es posible de alcanzar cuando
caminamos segurxs y de la mano de nuestros ideales. ¡Qué esperanza ponen de
manifiesto, y qué magia la que hacen posible!

The immense variety of expressions, discourses and languages in the 17 profiles and
4 essays in this publication reflects not only the richness and creative power of
queer arts in the Americas, a region as vast as it is diverse and contradictory. This
variety represents above all a polyphony of propositions that suggest ways of creating,
producing and being that challenge pre-established norms and refuse domestication.
Being queer, dissident, LGBTQI+ or marica is a political act in itself in many parts of this
region, so the work of these artists will always be a source of reflection, tension, risk and
amazement. The artists and projects that are part of this paradigm speak of the body,
language, childhood, oppression, affection, nature, survival, identity and love.
