KRUDXS CUBENSI

Feminist, queer and vegan hip-hop from Cuba

El hip-hop cubano feminista, queer y vegano

Hip-hop has established itself as both a musical

genre and as a specific urban subculture since

it emerged in the 70s from Afroamerican and

Hispanic youth groups in the US. For long a

male/cisgender-exclusive space, it’s often been

associated with gender violence, homophobia

and sexism. Krudxs Cubensi (Odaymara Cuesta

and Olivia Prendes) is a Cuban duo that has

colonised and transformed this space into a

platform for action and change. Originally a street

theatre group from 90s Havana, they slowly

found their own language to speak about their

African and Latin cultures and about dissidence,

feminism, veganism and queer politics. Together

with a collaborative approach and a sound built

in between Havana and Austin (USA), their music

and dance mix composition, performance,

politics and activism.
