El Alto 124 Renata Carvalho
125
Portuguese script, and thought it was beautiful.
We became close friends, we kept writing, and
I was sent the video Renata sent for her audition
and followed from afar the whole process of
rehearsal that led to the first performances of the
show in Brazil.
I saw a preview of a scene in the Instituto Tomie
Ohtake when I was back there to perform the
show in English as part of FIT (International
Theatre Festival) in Belo Horizonte.
I’ll never forget seeing Renata perform part of
the show in front of the public for the first time.
I was so struck by her extraordinary charisma
and beauty, and the incredibly close connection
between her and the audience. It was so
beautiful to see. It moved me so profoundly.
This was the Brazilian Queen Jesus; and the fact
that she was so utterly different from the British
Queen Jesus was part of what I so utterly loved
about her work.
A few months later I was back in Brazil to perform
excerpts of the show with a beautiful choir of
homeless people in the FLUPP Festival in the
favela of the Cidade de Deus in Rio, and on the
way there I was able to catch the full production
in Sao Paulo and get a flavour of the impact it was
having on audiences.
It was very clear that something very special was
going on, and that my script, Natalia’s direction
and Renata’s performance were having a powerful
impact on trans people and on the whole cultural
scene. I remember a young trans woman coming
up to me, tears in her eyes, to tell me seeing the
pay had transformed her life.
This moved me beyond words.
This profound sense has stayed with me ever
since, as I followed the triumphant progress
of the play through all the hatreds and the
difficulties of the next few years. By this stage,
Natalia was (and remains) an Associate Director of
our company in Scotland, and I felt a real duty to
support and celebrate our sisters’ achievements
in Brazil.
Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to be able to
see Renata perform the show in Berlin, a month
or so before performing the Scottish Queen
Jesus in Brussels.
Both productions have deepened and
strengthened with time and evolved in
completely different directions. I can’t wait to
see what happens in October in Glasgow later
in the year (2019), when we come together in
the same theatre to celebrate the show’s tenth
anniversary.
Me and Natalia have become close friends, and
the two Queen Jesuses loving sisters.
Our story has lasted a long time; but in another
way, I sense it has hardly begun. © Jo Clifford

LA ‘REINA JESÚS’,
ENTRE ESCOCIA
Y BRASIL
A último
momento, cuando ya quedaban muy pocos
lugares disponibles, logramos encontrar otra
espectadores. Después de la última función, una
persona se me acercó. Se veía profundamente
conmovida y me preguntó si podía obtener
