The new marica musical soul from the Andes
El nuevo espíritu musical marica de los Andes
Eme is a Peruvian singer and composer that
seeks to refresh Latin America’s musical folklore.
Together with their band, Eme was invited to
perform at Outburst in 2018. It was one of the
most moving events we have ever hosted in the
festival. They have since been invited through
the British Council to perform at Cumbre Tajin
Festival in Mexico and Pride in Mexico City
in 2019. To experience Eme on stage is to be
reminded of the power of music to speak to the
human spirit and to summon something inside
that opens us up and expands us. In an age of
Instagram and obsession with self-image and
identity, Eme’s marica soul seems to rise from
something much older and wiser, bringing a
youthful fire and relevance to traditional forms.
We first met in 2017 at a workshop event that
Outburst facilitated at the Sala de Parto theatre
festival in Lima. It was evident that Eme was
a performer and activist with the leadership
qualities we need right now: generosity, vision
and the ability to tell and sing stories that matter,
in a way that can be heard beyond just the ears.
Eme also reminds us that to centre queer on
white global northern experience is to deny
those in other regions their own intrinsically
rooted understanding of gender and sexualities
and deprives us all of stories that help us to
understand human experience in more profound
and authentic ways, wherever we are.

Eme es unx cantautorx peruanx que busca
refrescar el folklore musical latinoamericano. Su
participación (folclore a su banda) en Outburst de
2018 fue uno de los momentos más memorables
que hemos tenido en el festival. Desde entonces,
Eme se ha presentado, con el apoyo del British
Council, en Cumbre Tajín en México y en el Pride
de CDMX en 2019. La experiencia de ver a Eme en
el escenario nos pone en contacto con el poder
de la música de interpelar al espíritu humano y de
abrir y expandir sus fronteras. En nuestras épocas
de Instagram y de la obsesión con la imagen y
la identidad propias, el espíritu marica de Eme
surge y se contrapone con su raíz ancestral y su
sabiduría, que le inyectan vitalidad a los géneros
musicales tradicionales.
Eme y yo nos conocimos por primera vez en Lima
en 2017, en un evento que Outburst facilitaba
dentro del festival de teatro Sala de Parto. Desde
entonces se me hizo evidente que Eme era unx
performer y activista con las cualidades de
liderazgo necesarias para nuestra cultura hoy en
día: generosidad, visión, y la capacidad de cantar
y contar historias que importan, de una manera
que perduran más allá de su interpretación.
Eme también nos recuerda que anclar lo queer
en los parámetros del hemisferio norte es
negarle a otras regiones sus significados propios
en torno al género y a la sexualidad, a la vez que
nos depriva a todxs de entender la experiencia
humana de una forma más profunda y auténtica,
donde quiera que estemos y de donde quiera que
