inclusive, in<strong>for</strong>mal and constructive dialogue that has developed,<br />

supported by targeted research and policy analysis, has indeed<br />

fostered a better understanding of contemporary migration<br />

issues. It has also facilitated <strong>the</strong> identification of effective practices<br />

and approaches through <strong>the</strong> sharing of practical experiences,<br />

perspectives and priorities. As important, <strong>the</strong> IDM has helped<br />

create a more open climate <strong>for</strong> migration policy debate and<br />

has served to build confidence between and among <strong>the</strong> various<br />

stakeholders in migration.<br />

The <strong>International</strong> Dialogue on <strong>Migration</strong> Publication Series (or<br />

<strong>the</strong> Red Book Series) is designed to capture and review <strong>the</strong> results<br />

of <strong>the</strong> events and research carried out within <strong>the</strong> framework of<br />

<strong>the</strong> IDM. The Red Book Series is prepared and coordinated by <strong>the</strong><br />

IDM Division of <strong>IOM</strong>’s <strong>Migration</strong> Policy and Research Department<br />

(MPR).<br />

This publication includes <strong>the</strong> reports and supplementary<br />

materials of <strong>the</strong> two workshops which took place under <strong>the</strong><br />

overarching <strong>the</strong>me of <strong>the</strong> 2010 IDM “<strong>Migration</strong> and Social<br />

Change”.<br />

The first workshop, “<strong>Migration</strong> and Transnationalism:<br />

Opportunities and Challenges”, was held on 9 and 10 March 2010,<br />

followed by <strong>the</strong> second workshop, “Societies and Identities: The<br />

Multifaceted Impact of <strong>Migration</strong>”, on 19 and 20 July 2010. Both<br />

events took place in Geneva, Switzerland. With regards to <strong>the</strong><br />

latter workshop, <strong>IOM</strong> would like to thank <strong>the</strong> Government of<br />

Australia <strong>for</strong> making <strong>the</strong> event possible.<br />

The IDM 2010 took place under <strong>the</strong> overall supervision of<br />

Michele Klein Solomon, Director, MPR and Philippe Boncour,<br />

Head, IDM Division, MPR. Special thanks <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> preparation of <strong>the</strong><br />

background papers and reports contained in this publication are<br />

owed to Sarah M. Brooks, Nyaradzo Chari-Imbayago, Janepicha<br />

Cheva-Isarakul and Karoline Popp, <strong>the</strong> principal authors.<br />

The publication opens with an executive summary of lessons<br />

learned and options <strong>for</strong> policymakers on <strong>the</strong> subject of migration<br />

and social change derived from <strong>the</strong> two workshops which was<br />
