Chapeau d’apparat ou signature en tant que membre
d’une tribu, le chapeau occupe une grande place dans le
costume traditionnel de la grande île. Rien qu’avec son
galurin, on peut différencier une tribu d’une autre.
Anguleux, conique ou quadrangulaire sans rebord… le chapeau
est une forme de signature de chaque ethnie à Madagascar.
Dans l’ethnie Merina, au centre, le chapeau est en paille ayant
une forte ressemblance avec le chapeau “panama”. Dans la
tribu betsileo, dans la région haute matsiatra, les gens ont pour
habitude de porter un chapeau quadrangulaire sans rebord, de
couleur souvent beige et violette, à l’intérieur duquel se trouve une
poche, qui, selon l’usage local, sert à garder les « tso-drano » ou
bénédiction présentées sous forme
d’argent. Dans la région sud-est
de l’île, dans les ethnies antemoro,
antefasy, antesaka, les chapeaux
sont similaires à ceux des betsileo.
Seule la couleur diffère, les chapeaux
du Sud-Est sont de couleur beige
ornés de carrés rouges.
Dans la tribu mahafaly, dans le
sud-ouest de l’île, le chapeau est
de forme conique, telle une bosse
de zébu. Dans cette tribu le zébu
tient une place culturelle prépondérante. Dans le nord de l’île,
le chapeau est appelé, penjy (pendzi), il s’agit d’un chapeau en
paille à grands rebords. Dans la côte est, l’ethnie Betsimisaraka
porte un chapeau borizano (bourizanou) au large bord, appelé
« gebageba », la paille utilisée est l’ahibano, qui pousse dans les
vallées humides au bord des cours d'eau.
A formal hat or a sign as a member of a tribe, the hat
occupies a large place in the traditional costume of the

Antemoro, Antefasy, Antesaka, hats are similar to those of the
Betsileo, only the colour differs; the hats of the Southeast are
beige colours adorned with red squares.
In the Mahafaly tribe, in the south-west of the island, the hat
is conical in shape, like a zebu bump. In this tribe the zebu holds
a prominent place in the culture. In the north of the island, the
hat is called, penjy (pendzi), straw hat with large rims. In the
east coast, the Betsimisaraka ethnic group wears a borizano
(bourizanou) hat with a wide edge, called "gebageba", the straw
used is Ahibano, which grows in the wet valleys along the rivers.
