DESTINATIONS
Diégo is in the far north of Madagascar, it is the largest
city in the Diana region. It was discovered by two
Portuguese sailors Diego Dias and Fernand Soares,
who decided to give their name to this second largest
bay in the world.
Time seems to have stopped in Diégo, the city currently contains historical
monuments from the history of Madagascar and is also the 3rd port of the
island. Indeed, it was for a long time the former French garrison, where we
can still see the remains of colonisation such as "The Courthouse of Classical
Architecture", which was built in 1903-1909. The basin was formerly adorned
with a nymphet in bronze, now extinct.
Le temps semble s’être
arrêté à Diégo, la ville
et aussi le 3e port de l’île.
Let us also not forget the statue of the Marechal Joffre, work of the sculptor
RAYMOND SUCRE who was inaugurated in October 1933 in homage to
Marechal JOFFRE who, from 1894 to 1905 completely reorganised the city,
becoming the fulcrum of the fleet. It was this square that was once the optical
post used to receive optical signals transmitted from Cap d'Ambre. It is at this
square that the Antsiranananese saw the arrivals ... .. and departures of boats.
In Diego, remember to visit the first "Government House", large square
pavilions with metallic shutters in the military district, colonial architecture,
built in 1892 by the first governor.
