La littérature orale malgache, dans
sa diversité, inclut différentes
formes d’expressions théâtrales.
Victime de censure durant
l’époque coloniale, le théâtre
malgache a su garder sa grandeur.
Le théâtre véhiculé par la civilisation
occidentale.
Le théâtre malgache a débuté avec
l’apport de la religion chrétienne en 1868.
A cette époque, les représentations de
pièces théâtrales étaient inspirées de
la Bible, entrecoupées par des chants
religieux, « Kaonseritra Masina » ou
concerts religieux. Ce sont des pièces
de théâtre jouées par les élèves des
écoles protestantes.

Le théâtre sous la colonisation
française.
Après la conquête de Madagascar en
1896, les militaires français créèrent
« Le Théâtre des Folies Militaires »
pour se divertir et adoucir la nostalgie
du pays. Le Palais du 1er Ministre à
Andafiavaratra (Antananarivo) fut le
lieu choisi pour les représentations.
Grande époque du théâtre malgache
Le 22 septembre 1899 : c’est la
date de la première pièce théâtrale
malgache « Zéphine et Armand » de
Rajaonah Tselatra. Elle est jouée
par la Troupe Tananarive Théâtre.
Le théâtre se popularisa très vite.
Les troupes théâtrales font des
représentations à tour de rôle au
Théâtre Municipal de Tananarive
en soirée le lundi et vendredi et en
matinée et soirée le week-end. La
Troupe Jeannette, la plus connue,
continue de tracer l’histoire du théâtre
malgache. Le mois d’Août dernier, la
commune urbaine d’Antananarivo
a effectué des rénovations au «
Tranompokonolona Analakely »,
afin de consacrer ce lieu au théâtre
malgache.
