Mayotte is made up of two large islands,
Petite Terre and Grande Terre,
spread over a territory of 374 km2.
Surrounded by a double barrier reef,
lagoon island, has the third largest
closed lagoon in the world. Not to mention the beauty
of the sea and these underwater features.
The current Mahorais population is the result of multiple
waves of immigration since its settlement around the 9th
century. Bantu, Arab, Malagasy and then Westerners, gave
birth to a mixed population and a large Muslim majority.
Compared to neighbouring islands Mayotte contains one
of the largest closed lagoons in the world, a haven of peace
where the underwater species abound. With its 1,100 km2,
it is no wonder that it has become the paradise for divers,
thanks to numerous, world-renowned spots. The lagoon
of Mayotte is ideal for sea excursions, scuba diving and for
observing marine mammals and the underwater fauna
of the lagoon which counts more than 800 species of fish,
some of which are under threat.
Apart from the lagoon there is also the "S" pass. The S
pass, known for its diving excursions is one of the most
remarkable sights of Mayotte. This pass, so named for its
beautiful sinuous shape, represents the former meander of
a river which brought together the exisiting rivers. Every
year from July to the end of October, in the turquoise waters
of the lagoon, you can discover the enchanting show of
humpback whales; in this vast lagoon there are also 12
species of dolphins that cohabit marvellously together:
long beaks, spotted dolphins, dolphins in the "bowler hat",
humpback dolphins ...devil fish, but there are also sea
turtles. Mayotte is waiting for you!
