Summary
Forest decline in the Venetian plain (NE Italy) is a major concern. Particularly
English Oak (Quercus robur) looks seriously damaged, being in strong ecological
competition with Common Hornbeam. A survey was planned in six forests located
at different sites in the Venetian territory, in order to obtain more information on
soil qualities in relation with forest health, and to suggest possible restoration
strategies.
The areas investigated were located in the lower portion of the Holocene alluvial
plain. Microtopography determined significant differences in soil hydrological
regime, and therefore the whole area is strongly influenced by the groundwater
level, which conditions the soil quality. Most soils are Inceptisols and/or have
aquic/oxyaquic properties which may enhance forest decline. Soil drainage control
and changes in present land management are suggested so as to create favourable
conditions for oak growth.
Key words: Soil quality; forest decline; soil hydrology.
