For the most part, itfollows paths and mule tracks, and only for ashort distance two secondary roads of Caneva. It is suitable for non-expert hikers as it hasa length of about 8 km and almost 400 m ofpositive altitude difference. It can be travelledall year round even if the weather can be veryhot in summer. Lug sole shoes and good watersupplies are recommended. The route starts just upstream from the square Fiaschettiof Caneva (where you can admire the centuryoldlime tree) near a historic fountain. Take ViaTambruz and follow it for about 1 km until youreach the mouth of the Bocca de Val, next tothe entrance to one of the numerous SP29 quarriesin the area of Caneva. It is right here in thisstrip of foothills that there is a precious ‘vein’of pure calcium carbonate, locally knownVia Luigi CadornaVia Arman do DiazVia Col di LanaVia Piero GobettiVia IsonzoVia Luigi Cadornaas ‘Marmorino’, listed among the geositesof Friuli Venezia Giulia. From here, take amule track that climbs towards the Castleof Caneva (1), located at the top of the Col deFer, in a particularly strategic position, wherethe remains of the ancient walls and splendidbell tower with the church of St Lucy (2) arestill present today. Halfway up the slope, passa quarry amphitheatre and deviate into thevalley, then continue on the opposite side upto the hamlet known as the Red Land, ‘TerraRio FiaschettiRio Silligarossa’, due to red-brown colour of the groundand rocks (1.8 km from the start). The wholeroute is characterized with typical thermophilicvegetation: mainly Black Hornbeam, MannaAsh and Field Maple with a notable presence ofHolly. The aridity, besides being related to themild winter temperatures, is also, and aboveall, edaphic. The entire route is characterizedby a deeply karst environment with stoneswith odd and fascinating shapes, ‘machined’by millennia of corrosion! The path continuesuphill with steep and relatively bumpy sectionsalong a mule track, among ancient terracesnow invaded by vegetation. Stretches of aridmeadows make the route varied and wild. When you arrive on a forest track (2.5 km fromthe start), follow its gentle ups and downs(maximum altitude 400 m a.s.l.) until you arriveto Pian Salere (4.5 km from the start). From here, along the ancient path of ‘Madonnadegli Scalini’ (3), climbing up from Stevenàto the hamlet of Lamar and to Cansiglio, youdescend to the ‘Madonnina’ (4) and end up atthe foothill road (5.5 km from the start). Theroute is moderately steep, but splendid andsuggestive. Continue along the paved roadfor about 1 km (6.5 km from the start), thendetour to a dirt road which winds through fieldsand stretches of woods until it returns to ViaTambruz and the route starting point.Via LivenzaTorrente FontanVia Fabio FViSP29Rio ChiaradiaVia SilligaVia CanevonRio SilligaSacileStrada CanevonlinVia FontanazRoute general dataVia Canevon8 km 2h 30’dirt roadpaved roadpetfriendlyCanevawww.comune.caneva.pn.it
