evangelização católica encontrou lugares e edifícios, onde a ruína transmitia a mistura de fé,mistério, coragem e uma memória desaparecida. A ruína torna-se então parte do imagináriodos artistas.Pintores como Mantegna e Poussin utilizam a ruína como peça fulcral de composição emalgumas das suas pinturas. Para Mantegna a presença da ruína na composição da pinturaera “...suporte essencial da estrutura do quadro e da estatura moral das personagens...“ 84 .Representa a utopia da reconstrução de uma ordem que se encontrava no esquecimento doshomens.No século XIX, na Inglaterra, os jardins apresentavam uma obsessão pelo carácter paisagísticoda ruína. Em alguns casos chegou-se a construir um edifício inteiro, para de seguida o fazerexplodir de modo a que o processo fosse mais rápido. Esta atitude romântica não é estranhatanto a Siza como a Souto Moura.Na casa Alcino Cardoso, Álvaro Siza inventa uma ruína junto à piscina, só para atribuir umenquadramento paisagístico. Na casa Beires, simula a explosão de uma bomba no cantoda casa que passa a revelar as suas entranhas; uma explosão metafórica, que justifica amudança de linguagem, de um pano de parede fechado para um pano ondulado de vidro.Nas permanências deixadas em São Victor, cria uma nostalgia recuperada através de restaurosde quatro casas existentes, ou uma nostalgia deixada por oposições tipológicas.Percebe-se, em Eduardo Souto Moura, uma proximidade com a abordagem teórica de ColinRowe e de Robert Venturi. Paralelamente a uma procura da abstracção como a aproximação àNatureza (a abstracção defendida por Monestiroli como analogia para procurar as proporçõesnaturais), Souto Moura utiliza o fragmento ou a fragmentação para relacionar a linguagemabstracta com a história e a memória constantemente reciclada. Como Monestiroli afirma: “... la analogia com la naturaleza pertenece al concepto de construcción, de organicidad dela construcción llevada hasta la confusión de los elementos arquitectónicos en un todo.” 85De certa forma parece existir em Souto Moura uma preocupação com a construção comoum todo, como representação concreta da analogia com a natureza na sua relação do todocom o método construtivo. Para atingir a natureza utiliza o instrumento da modernidade querealiza a analogia com a natureza.Segundo Monestiroli a abstracção é uma analogia conceptual que permite à arquitecturalibertar-se das referências formais da própria Natureza.
