På Houstonkontrollen står personalen beredd med sina traditionella
segercigarrer, att tändas för varje lyckad etapp. Men nu ser de på sina
kontrolltavlor att de rätta reglagen inte slås till av Paul där uppe i rymden,
att de rätta kontakterna inte trycks in. Pauls röst hörs dåligt, störningar.
–I’m leaving, that’s all!
–Houston here. Could you repeat that?
–I’m quitting the whole thing. I’m tired of being some sort of Christmas
decoration for the rocket company. I’d like to tell all people listening in, all
over the world, to consider the madness of the space program, the enormous
costs and the mendacious messages I have to read to you from up here!
Pauls röst verkade upprörd men inte okontrollerad. Han verkade veta
vad han gjorde. Och nu kunde Houstonkontrollen se Paul igen på sina
TV-skärmar, han hade återvänt till förarplatsen från var han nu hade varit.
Han viftade med deras manuskript.
–It’s all written down on paper what they want me to say, the whole
spontaneous shit about the free western civilized world with race riots,
ghettos and governmental acid experiments against innocent people ...
–He must have gone mad, that’s the thing that could happen you know,
those unknown diseases of space.
–Call it a disease if you want, I’m sick of it all. I don’t wanna do any
more of that garbage propaganda, that trash about all us inhabitants of the
wonderful planet earth.
