Sir Howard Newby, KB, CBE, BA, PhD, AcSS, DL, was Vice-
Chancellor of the University of Liverpool from 2008 to January
2015. Prior to this he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of
the West of England in Bristol, the Chief Executive of the Higher
Education Funding Council for England, Vice-Chancellor of
the University of Southampton, Chairman and Chief Executive
of the Economic and Social Research Council, President of
Universities UK, and President of the British Association for the
Advancement of Science.
He was made a CBE in 1995 for services to social science and a
knighthood in 2000 for services to higher education.
He was a member of the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Council
from 2009 - 2015.

Professor Richard Saller is currently the Dean of Stanford
University’s School of Humanities and Sciences and Professor of
Classics and History (2007-present). Before moving to Stanford
he was Dean of Social Sciences (1994-2001) and then Provost at
the University of Chicago (2002-2006). His research specialty is
the social and economic history of ancient imperial Rome. He is
the author of Personal Patronage under the Early Empire (1982)
and Patriarchy, Property and Death in the Roman Family (1994);
co-author of The Roman Empire: Economy, Society and Culture
(2nd ed. 2014); and co-editor of the Cambridge Economic History
of the Greco-Roman World (2007). In 2005 he was elected to the
American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Richard Saller 教 授 現 為 美 國 史 丹 福 大 學 人 文 科 學 學 院 院 長 兼
經 史 學 教 授 (2007-)。Saller 教 授 在 加 入 史 丹 福 大 學 前 , 曾 擔
任 芝 加 哥 大 學 社 會 科 學 院 院 長 (1994-2001), 其 後 升 任 該 校 首
席 副 校 長 (2002-2006)。Saller 教 授 的 研 究 專 長 為 古 羅 馬 帝 國
的 社 會 及 經 濟 史 , 著 有 《 早 期 帝 國 的 個 人 任 免 權 》(Personal
Patronage under the Early Empire)((1982)、《 羅 馬 家 庭 中
的 父 權 體 系 、 財 產 權 和 死 亡 》(Patriarchy, Property, and Death
in the Roman Family)(1994), 並 與 他 人 合 著 《 羅 馬 帝 國 : 經
濟 、 社 會 及 文 化 》(The Roman Empire: Economy, Society and
Culture)(2014 年 第 二 版 ), 以 及 與 他 人 合 編 《 劍 橋 古 希 臘 羅
馬 世 界 的 經 濟 歷 史 》(Cambridge Economic History of Greco-
Roman World)(2007)。2005 年 ,Saller 教 授 獲 選 為 美 國 藝 術
與 科 學 學 院 院 士 。
