Summary
From working-class to middle-class neighborhood
Processes of gentrification in Sjællandsgadekvarteret in Aahus 1970-1990
Sjællandsgadekvarteret in downtown Aarhus is an old working-class neighborhood build in the late
19 th century. In the first half of the 20 th century old houses and estates of Sjællandsgadekvarteret
were, rundown by the use of many generations and around 1970 the neighborhood however as a
neighborhood with physical and social problems.
But in a 20 years period, 1970-1990, Sjællandsgadekvarteret underwent a development, which
means that Sjællandsgadekvarteret becomes an attractive and exspensive neighborhood in
downtown Aarhus. A so called gentrifications process had appeared in Sjællandsgadekvarteret.
This thesis investigates through theories of gentrification how the neighborhood-movement of
Sjællandsgadekvarteret and the urban politics and Aarhus municipality infected the development of
Sjællandsgadekvarteret 1970-1990 and discusses how the two actors have to be placed compared to
the processes.
The thesis show the neighborhood-movement of Sjællandsgadekvarteret through social and
culturally work created a special environment, which had appealed to other socio-economic groups.
The thesis also shows how the municipality of Aarhus made great changes in its urban politics and
urban planning in comparison to the old and close urban environment in Sjællandsgadekvarteret and
downtown Aarhus.
The thesis also shows how the process of gentrification in Sjællandsgadekvarteret was started by a
revaluation of the closed urban space. Both the neighborhood-movement of Sjællandsgadekvarteret
and the municipality of Aarhus were helping to make a revaluation the urban space from 1970-1990
. It was not a economic revaluation at first place but a cultural revaluation, which made the
gentrification process take place in Sjællandsgadekvarteret.
