La dificultad estaba en la
singularidad del lugar, en las inmensas
dimensiones del sitio, en la tentación
de pasar de un trabajo de limpieza a
otro de decoración, en la falta de
experiencias anteriores de
intervención en lugares de alto valor
geológico y biológico en las que poder
apoyarse, en la posibilidad de arrasar
estos valores realizando una obra que
se quedara en mera atracción
turística.
La “complejidad” no era tanto
técnica como inducida por el
programa, ya que para ese lugar se
propusieron muchos destinos, tales
como convertirlo en teatro, auditorio,
discoteca con varias pistas de baile,
restaurante, cafeterías, piscina, hotel,
parador de turismo, etcétera, pero
para César Manrique estas o
cualquiera otras funciones debían ser
compatibles con la preservación de la
gruta y sus valores científicos,
ambientales y paisajísticos, así como
con la idea, expresada claramente en
sus primeras declaraciones
periodísticas, de “resaltar su propia
belleza” natural, es decir, de evitar la
transformación irreversible del lugar,
la inclusión de elementos discordantes

The “complexity” was less
technical than programmatic, since

the cave - theatre, auditorium,

floors, restaurant, cafeterias,
swimming pool, hotel, national inn
and so forth. But for César
Manrique these or any other
purposes would have to be
compatible with the conservation of
the grotto and its scientific and
environmental value and its
importance in the landscape, as well
as with the idea, clearly expressed
in his first interview with the press,
that he wanted to “highlight its
natural beauty”. In other words, he
intended to refrain from any
irreversible transformation of the
place, the inclusion of dissonant
elements or what might be termed

verändern und in der Gefahr, diese
Werte zu zerstören und eine reine
Touristenattraktion zu schaffen.
Die „Komplexität“ war nicht so sehr
technisch als von der Absicht bedingt,
denn für diesen Ort wurden zahlreiche
Verwendungszwecke vorgeschlagen, zum
Beispiel als Theater, Auditorium,
Diskothek mit mehreren Tanzflächen,
Restaurant, Cafeterias, Schwimmbad,
Hotel, staatliches Touristenhotel etc.,
aber für César Manrique mussten diese
oder andere Funktionen mit der
Erhaltung der Grotte und ihren
wissenschaftlichen, ökologischen und
landschaftlichen Werten vereinbar sein,
und so auch mit der Idee, die klar in
seinen ersten Erklärungen an die Presse
ausgedrückt ist: „seine natürliche
Schönheit zu betonen“, also die
unwiederbringliche Verwandlung des
Ortes zu vermeiden, die Einfügung von
unpassenden Elementen und das, was
wir „Dekoration“ nennen könnten, die
das Wunderbare der Höhle verdecken
würde.
