objetos, convirtiéndolos en iconos.
Para un artista como César Manrique,
que antes de abrazar la abstracción
matérica ha realizado los murales
anteriormente descritos, estos
procedimientos plásticos no le son del
todo ajenos. En los murales de la
Terminal del Aeropuerto de
Guacimeta, objetos, utensilios y seres,
como cestas de mimbre, sombreros
conejeros, cubos, peces y plantas, se
presentan agigantados,
esquemáticamente planos y convertidos
en símbolos alegóricos de la isla.
El encuentro con las obras de este
movimiento artístico, entonces
insurgente y novedoso, le permitió a
César Manrique no sólo recuperar
saberes y técnicas empleados en los
primeros años de su carrera sino
ampliar las posibilidades de sus
capacidades creativas. Así, en su
pintura seguirá fiel al estilo
consolidado antes de su viaje a
Nueva York, desarrollando las
posibilidades de la abstracción
matérica hasta los últimos cuadros
Pop art was to make three
contributions to the world of
avant-garde art: the change in
scale, enlarging the tiny; the use of
flat colours, outlining figures; and
the schematization of objects,
turning them into icons. Such
plastic procedures were not totally
foreign to an artist like César
Manrique, who before embracing
“matter” abstraction had done the
murals described above. In the
mural in the Guacimeta Airport
terminal, objects, utensils and
living beings, such as wicker
baskets, top hats, buckets, fish and
plants, are painted on a
schematically flat, gigantic scale
and converted into allegorical
symbols of the island.
The encounter with the works of
this, at the time, insurgent and
novel artistic movement enabled
César Manrique not only to recover
skills and techniques used in the
early years of his career, but to
enlarge on the potential of his
creative aptitudes. In his painting,
he would remain loyal to the style
consolidated prior to his trip to
New York, developing the
