gran esperanza para el desarrollo
económico de la isla, empiece a
ocupar la costa y los laboriosos
trabajos agrícolas se abandonen para
atender las necesidades de la
incipiente hostelería.
En el prólogo de ese libro,
publicado en 1974 con el título
Lanzarote. Arquitectura inédita,
Manrique escribe: “Mi preocupación
fue de una manera global defender el
paisaje y su medio ambiente, en donde
entraba, como factor importante, el
hábitat, como conjunto, ya que paisaje
y arquitectura pueden ser una sola
cosa cuando está integrada y adaptada
perfectamente a la tierra”. Esta frase,
entre otras muchas que se hallan en el
libro, denota cómo César Manrique,
en una fecha muy temprana, para lo
que ha sido la formación de la
conciencia paisajística en España,
posee ya un concepto maduro tanto
del paisaje y sus valores como del
papel que en él juega la arquitectura
propia del lugar.
De esta manera, a finales de los
años sesenta, en el mismo momento

architecture), Manrique wrote:
“My concern, overall, was to
defend the landscape and its
environment, which included
human dwellings as an important
factor, since landscape and
architecture can be one and the
same thing when the latter is
adapted and blends perfectly into
the land”. This sentence, among
many others found in the book,
shows that César Manrique, very
early on in comparison to the
coming of age of awareness of the
landscape in Spain in general, had
a very mature idea of the
landscape and its values as well as
of the role of traditional
architecture in that context.

Im Vorwort dieses Buches, das 1974
mit dem Titel Lanzarote. Arquitectura
inédita (Lanzarote, unbekannte
Architektur) veröffentlicht wurde,
schreibt Manrique: „Meine Sorge war
es, eine allgemein gültige Methode zu
finden, um die Landschaft und die
Natur zu schützen, bei der als
wichtiger Faktor das Habitat als
Ganzes zum Tragen kommt, denn die
Landschaft und die Architektur
können ein und dieselbe Sache sein,
wenn diese vollkommen an das Land
angepasst wird“. Dieser Satz zeigt, wie
so viele, die in diesem Buch stehen,
dass, wenn man die Herausbildung des
Landschaftsbewusstseins in Spanien
verfolgt, César Manrique schon sehr
früh ein reifes Konzept der Landschaft
hatte sowie ihrer Werte, wie der Rolle,
die die örtliche Architektur spielt.
